Chapter 4 - The Spider’s Web

While the Valenti mansion settled into a fragile, uneasy peace, across the city in a high-rise penthouse overlooking Central Park, a storm was brewing.

Victor Moretti swirled amber whiskey in a heavy crystal tumbler, watching the glittering night lights of Manhattan through floor-to-ceiling glass. Moretti was the head of the rival Brooklyn syndicate, a man who viewed Adrian Valenti’s shipping empire not as a competitor, but as a personal insult to his dominance.

The heavy oak doors of the penthouse opened, and Marcus Vance—the sleek, ruthless corporate lawyer who had once protected front organizations like Bright Harbor—stepped into the room.

"The report from the Valenti estate just came in," Marcus said, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses as he placed a manila folder on Moretti’s desk.

Moretti didn't turn around. "Did the socialites successfully humiliate the new nanny?"

"Worse than that," Marcus said, a grim smirk crossing his face. "The socialites failed. Beatrice reported that Valenti threw them all out on their ears because the nanny... she managed to get Sophia to speak."

Moretti’s hand tightened around his glass until his knuckles turned white. He slowly turned around, his cold, reptilian eyes fixing on the lawyer. "Speak? The child hasn't uttered a syllable since the car bomb went off."

"Not only did she speak," Marcus continued, opening the folder to reveal surveillance photographs taken from the edge of the Valenti estate, "but Valenti hired her on the spot. Her name is Madeline Brooks. Former textile restorer, zero political connections, completely off our radar."

Moretti walked over to the desk, picking up a photograph of Madeline kneeling beside Sophia in the grand foyer.

"A nobody," Moretti muttered, his lips curling into a cruel smile. "Valenti thinks he can clean house and play family man while we dismantle his shipping routes from the inside. How poetic."

"What do you want to do?" Marcus asked. "Eliminate her? It would send a message."

"No," Moretti shook his head slowly, taking a sip of whiskey. "Killing a nanny just brings unnecessary police heat, and Mayor Harrison is already breathing down our necks after the Bright Harbor fiasco. We don't need martyrs."

"Then what?"

"We use her," Moretti smiled coldly. "Every man who rises to the top of the underworld has one fatal flaw—a soft spot he tries to hide. For years, Adrian’s wall was impenetrable because he kept everyone at a distance. Now, he’s invited an ordinary, vulnerable woman right into the heart of his fortress."

Moretti tapped his finger against Madeline’s face in the photograph.

"Find out everything about her," Moretti ordered. "Every debt she owes, every broken relationship, every secret she left behind before she walked into that mansion. When Valenti realizes he can't protect her from her own past, the wall will crumble from the inside out."
