Chapter 8 - The Trap

Midnight descended over Brooklyn like a heavy velvet shroud.
Inside a dimly lit warehouse overlooking the East River, crates of smuggled electronics and luxury goods were stacked to the ceiling. Victor Moretti sat in a leather armchair surrounded by his top capos, swirling his whiskey glass as he waited for his informants to report on the failed sniper attack.
The heavy metal sliding door of the warehouse rattled open.
Footsteps echoed across the concrete floor—heavy, deliberate, and entirely alone.
Moretti frowned, waving his men back as he peered into the shadows. "Who goes there? Show yourself!"
Out of the darkness stepped Adrian Valenti.
He wore a dark wool overcoat, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his face carved from granite. He walked toward the center of the warehouse, stopping twenty feet away from Moretti’s crew, utterly unbothered by the dozen semi-automatic weapons pointed directly at his chest.
Moretti chuckled, standing up and adjusting his silk tie. "Well, well. Look who decided to visit the neighborhood. I heard your morning tea party got interrupted today, Adrian. Shame about the conservatory glass. That stuff is expensive."
Adrian didn't smile. His gray eyes were flat, dead, and infinitely dangerous.
"You missed, Victor," Adrian said, his voice cutting through the cavernous silence of the warehouse.
Moretti smirked. "A warning shot. Just reminding you that your little fortress isn't as impenetrable as you think. You bring strays into your home, Adrian—people with messy pasts, people tied up in federal litigation—and you expect them not to drag their enemies right to your front door."
"Madeline Brooks didn't bring her enemies to my door," Adrian said softly, taking one slow step forward. "You invited them in when you decided to test my patience."
"Oh, you care about the nanny?" Moretti mocked, laughing harshly. "What's the matter, Valenti? Did you finally find a woman who doesn't run away screaming when she sees the monster behind the silk tie? Too bad she's a liability. And in our world, liabilities get erased."
Adrian stopped. He tilted his head slightly, a cold, humorless smile touching his lips.
"You think this is about liability," Adrian said.
Before Moretti could reply, the exterior doors of the warehouse blew inward with a deafening crash.
Flashbang grenades detonated overhead, filling the cavernous space with blinding white light and thunderous sound. Before Moretti’s men could raise their weapons, heavily armed Valenti operatives—led by Luca—poured into the building from all sides, swarming the syndicate capos and disarming them in a matter of seconds.
Moretti reached frantically for the pistol holstered at his belt, but before his fingers could wrap around the grip, Adrian closed the distance between them with terrifying speed.
A single, crushing punch to Moretti’s jaw sent the crime lord crashing over a stack of wooden crates, spitting blood onto the concrete.
Adrian stood over him, pressing the heel of his Italian leather shoe firmly against Moretti’s chest, pinning him to the floor.
"Listen to me very carefully, Victor," Adrian whispered, leaning down until his face was inches from Moretti’s terrified eyes. "You want to declare war on me? Come to my docks. You want to hit my shipping lanes? Be my guest. But if you ever—ever—direct another weapon toward my home, or toward the woman who brought my children back to life..."
Adrian pressed his shoe down harder, squeezing the air from Moretti’s lungs.
"...I won't just burn your syndicate to the ground. I will personally feed you to the fish in the Hudson before the sun comes up. Do we understand each other?"
Moretti gapped like a fish out of water, his eyes wide with absolute terror. He nodded frantically. "Yes... yes! We understand!"
May you like
Adrian stepped back, adjusting his coat cuffs as if he had just stepped out of a business meeting. He turned to Luca. "Clean up this trash. And make sure Moretti’s primary financial accounts are completely frozen by morning. I want him bankrupt before breakfast."
"Right away, Boss," Luca saluted.
