Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Night fell gently over the coast. The wedding guests danced under the canopy of golden lights, their laughter echoing over the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the rocks below.

Julian and I sat on a quiet wooden bench near the edge of the cliff, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, watching Clara chase fireflies across the lawn with Arthur and Marcus.

"What are you thinking about?" Julian asked softly, resting his chin against my shoulder and wrapping his warm arms around my waist.

"I was thinking about where I was eight years ago," I murmured, taking a deep breath of the cool night air. "I was soaked in dirty water, sitting in a dark room, feeling like the world had ended."

Julian kissed my cheek gently. "And now?"

"And now I realize that the water didn't drown me," I smiled, turning my face toward his. "It just washed away everything that wasn't real."

In the distance, Arthur walked over, carrying two cups of warm cider. He handed one to Julian and one to me, looking out over the illuminated garden.

"All European markets closed in the green today, Chairman," Arthur noted with a twinkle in his eye. "And Titan Capital has been officially absorbed into our green energy trust."

"Arthur," I laughed softly. "It's my wedding night. No corporate reports."

"Force of habit, ma'am," Arthur chuckled, raising his cup in a toast. "To the future of the Vance family."

"To the future," Julian and I echoed together.

I looked back at the lawn where Clara was running toward us, her laughter ringing out clear and pure against the starlit sky. She leaped into Julian's arms, then pressed her soft cheek against mine.

"Look, Mommy!" Clara gasped, pointing up at the vast, endless night sky. "A shooting star!"

I looked up into the darkness. A bright streak of silver light burned across the sky, brilliant and unyielding, cutting through the shadows to light up the world below.

I held my daughter close, felt my husband’s warm hand wrapped in mine, and smiled into the night.

The storm was over. The ash had cleared. And the horizon ahead was bright, beautiful, and entirely ours.
