Chapter 7 - The Trap in Zurich

The glass-and-steel boardroom of the Grand Zurich Financial Tower hovered over the misty lake like an arena.
Victor Kray sat at the head of the long marble conference table, surrounded by a legion of corporate attorneys. He was a silver-haired man in his late sixties with eyes like a falcon. Sitting two chairs down from him, wearing a cheap, off-the-rack suit that couldn't hide his nervous sweat, was Brendan Voss.
When the heavy doors opened and I walked in, flanked by Arthur and Marcus, Brendan visibly flinched.
He looked weathered, aged far beyond his thirty-five years. His eyes were bloodshot, etched with the bitter resentment of a man who had lost everything and blamed the world for his own downfall.
"Executive Vance-Voss," Victor Kray greeted me with a smooth, predatory smile. "Thank you for joining us in Switzerland. I believe you know my senior strategist, Mr. Voss?"
I walked smoothly to the opposite end of the table and sat down, unfurling my leather pad. I didn't give Brendan a single second of eye contact. To me, he wasn't even a ghost; he was empty air.
"Let's skip the pleasantries, Victor," I said calmly. "You've called an emergency motion to seize control of our European logistics division based on the European Debt Consolidation Act. You claim Vanguard is in default of forty million dollars in supply chain bonds."
Brendan leaned forward, unable to restrain himself, his voice shaking with desperate spite. "We have you cornered, Cassidy! I spent two years studying Vanguard’s European tax filings from my cell! I know you used an offshore guarantee structure in 2021 to back those bonds! Under Swiss law, if that guarantee is unverified, Titan Capital has the immediate right to liquidate your equity!"
I finally turned my gaze toward Brendan. It was a look of pure, unadulterated pity.
"You really should have studied harder, Brendan," I said quietly.
I tapped a single key on my tablet. The massive presentation screens around the room flickered to life.
"Four days ago, Vanguard Holdings completed the full cash redemption of all European shipping bonds," I announced. "We didn't just verify the guarantee—we bought back ninety-nine percent of the public debt at above-market value using our liquid cash reserves."
Victor Kray’s smooth smile instantly vanished. He whipped his head around to stare at his legal team. "What is she talking about?!"
"Check your system, Mr. Kray," Arthur said smoothly, sliding a stack of stamped Swiss banking documents across the marble table. "As of 9:00 AM local time, Titan Capital does not hold distressed debt in Vanguard. What you hold is zero-yield cash credits that have just been returned to your master accounts."
Brendan turned ashen grey. "No... no, that’s impossible! They didn't have fifty million in liquid cash in the European sector! The filings said—"
"The filings you read were decoy financial reports, Brendan," I interrupted, leaning forward. "We leaked those exact figures to Titan Capital two months ago because we knew Kray was using a disgraced ex-convict for inside intelligence. We knew you would lead him straight into a liquidity trap."
Victor Kray stood up so violently his leather chair slammed against the window. He glared at Brendan with absolute fury. "You idiot! You told me her European operations were bleeding cash!"
"They were! I swear they were!" Brendan stammered, backing away from the table in pure terror.
"And while you were wasting three hundred million dollars trying to trap my logistics division, Victor," I continued, my voice calm and devastating, "Vanguard was quietly acquiring a controlling fifty-two percent stake in Titan Capital's primary lending bank in Frankfurt."
I stood up, adjusting my jacket. "As of five minutes ago, Vanguard Holdings is Titan Capital's primary creditor. And I am calling in your short-term loans. You have twenty-four hours to cover your margin calls, Victor. Otherwise, I liquidate Titan Capital by sunset tomorrow."
Victor Kray sank back into his chair, looking like a man who had just stepped onto a landmine.
Brendan collapsed onto the floor, grabbing Kray’s arm. "Mr. Kray, please! We can fight this! We can—"

"Get your filthy hands off me!" Kray roared, shoving Brendan onto the floor with disgust. "Security! Throw this useless parasite out of my building!"
I didn't watch as the guards dragged Brendan out into the hallway, screaming frantically for a second chance. I picked up my leather portfolio and walked out of the room, leaving the remnants of Victor Kray’s empire crumbling behind me.
