Chapter 3 - The Federal Extraction

The roar of the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk drowned out every sound in the neighborhood.
Within ninety seconds of the call ending, the peaceful, snow-dusted cul-de-sac of Sylvia’s neighborhood was transformed into a militarized zone. High-intensity spotlights cut through the dark, illuminating the frosted windows of the dining room in blinding white light. The powerful downwash from the low-hovering chopper sent lawn decorations, snow, and deck chairs flying across the yard.
Before David or Sylvia could process the noise, the front door was shattered off its frame with a breaching charge.
BOOM.
Wood splinters blew inward. Sylvia let out a blood-curdling shriek, dropping to her knees near the dining table as six US Marshals clad in dark tactical gear, helmets, and assault rifles flooded the hallway.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
David’s colleagues scrambled backward, knocking over chairs, spilling wine, and pressing themselves against the walls with their hands raised.
"GET DOWN!" a Marshal screamed, tackling David to the floor before he could even raise his hands. David’s face was slammed mercilessly against the hardwood floor, his arm twisted violently behind his back as the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists with sickening finality.
"I’m an attorney!" David squealed, his cheek pressed flat against a fallen slice of turkey. "You can't do this! I have rights! I know the sheriff!"
"Shut your mouth!" the Marshal barked, pinning David's neck with a heavy boot. "You’re under federal custody by order of the United States Department of Justice!"
Two tactical paramedics wearing red-crossed vests rushed past the kneeling guests directly into the kitchen.
"Target located! Female, seven months pregnant, severe abdominal trauma!" the lead paramedic shouted into his radio comms as he dropped to his knees beside me.
"Anna," a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I opened my eyes to see the chief flight surgeon, a dark-haired woman with steady hands and an intense focus. "I’m Dr. Mercer. Your father sent us. We’re taking care of you now. Can you tell me where it hurts?"
"My stomach... low..." I gasped, tears streaming down my face as another agonizing cramp hit. "She pushed me... I fell against the counter..."
Dr. Mercer’s eyes flared with anger as she glanced up at Sylvia, who was currently pinned against the refrigerator by a female Marshal, her expensive holiday dress rumpled, her face pale with terror.
"Setting up IV now! We have sign of placental abruption!" Dr. Mercer yelled to her partner. "Get the gurney! We need her airborne in sixty seconds or we lose this child!"
They lifted me with incredible gentleness onto the orange trauma board. As they wheeled me through the ruined living room, I looked down at David.
He was sitting on his knees, handcuffed, his expensive suit covered in dirt and food, glaring up at me with a mixture of disbelief and growing horror.
"Anna!" he yelled, his voice cracking. "Tell them to uncuff me! Tell them it was a private matter!"
I didn't say a word. I looked at him from the gurney, my face pale, my eyes filled with cold, absolute detachment.
As they carried me out into the freezing night air toward the idling helicopter parked on the front lawn, three black Suburban SUVs pulled into the driveway, their red and blue emergency lights flashing against the snow.
Out of the lead vehicle stepped a tall man in his late sixties, wearing a long charcoal wool coat over a dark suit. His silver hair was neatly combed, his jaw set like iron.
My father.
He ignored the Marshals, ignored the neighbors standing on their porches in pajamas, and walked straight to the gurney as the paramedics loaded me into the belly of the aircraft.
"Dad," I whimpered, reaching out my hand.
He grabbed my fingers in both of his, kneeling on the cold grass beside the helicopter floor. His hand was warm, trembling slightly despite his imposing presence.
"I’m here, Annie," he whispered, his eyes gleaming with fierce, protective tears. "I’m right here. You’re going to the federal medical center. The best surgical team in the state is waiting."
"David... he took my phone..."
My father leaned closer, brushing a wet strand of hair from my forehead, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that chilled me more than the winter wind.

"David is finished, Annie," my father said softly. "By sunrise, he will realize that the law he thought he understood was just a shadow compared to the storm he brought upon himself. Rest now, my sweet girl. Let your father work."
The helicopter doors slammed shut, and the rotors roared into a high-pitched whine as we lifted into the night sky, leaving the ruined house of Sylvia Vance far behind in the freezing snow.
