Chapter 6 - Sylvia’s Reckoning

While David was being broken in the federal building, his mother, Sylvia Vance, was experiencing her own public descent into hell.

At 10:00 AM, three unmarked police sedans and a transport van pulled up outside Sylvia’s pristine suburban home. The snow on her front lawn was still trampled from the helicopter landing the night before, and yellow crime scene tape was stretched across her porch.

Sylvia stood near her front window, wearing an expensive silk robe, clutching a cup of tea with hands that wouldn't stop shaking. She had spent the entire night calling her wealthy church friends, her country club acquaintances, and her family lawyer, but every single call had gone straight to voicemail.

The news had already broken.

Local TV station cameras were parked at the end of her driveway, their reporters broadcasting live: Prominent Suburban Socialite Arrested in Connection to Brutal Assault on Pregnant Daughter-in-Law of Chief Justice.

The front door opened with a key.

Two female federal marshals walked into her pristine foyer, their boots leaving wet, muddy tracks across her hand-woven Persian rug.

"Sylvia Vance?" the lead Marshal called out.

Sylvia dropped her teacup. It shattered on the marble floor, splashing hot liquid across her satin slippers.

"Get out of my house!" Sylvia screamed, her voice shrill and hysterical. "You have no right to be in here! Do you know who I am?! I am the president of the Suburban Heritage League! My late husband was a judge!"

"Sylvia Vance, you are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant for aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and conspiracy," the Marshal announced calmly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

"I didn't do anything!" Sylvia shrieked, backing away toward the dining room where the ruined Christmas dinner still sat on the table, the gravy turned cold and hard in its dish. "She fell! She was clumsy! She’s an ungrateful orphan who was trying to ruin my dinner!"

The Marshals didn't argue. They stepped forward, grabbed Sylvia’s thin arms, and forced them behind her back.

"Ow! You’re hurting me! My wrists!" Sylvia wailed as the cold metal locked around her wrists. "This is a outrage! David! David, help me!"

"Your son is currently in federal holding, ma'am," the Marshal said coldly, pulling Sylvia toward the front door. "He can't help you."

As they dragged Sylvia down her front steps in her silk robe and ruined slippers, the news cameras flashed incessantly. Reporters shoved microphones toward her face.

"Mrs. Vance! Did you push your pregnant daughter-in-law?!"

"Mrs. Vance! Is it true you forced her to eat standing up?!"

"Did you know she was Chief Justice Montgomery's daughter?!"

Sylvia tried to cover her face with her cuffed hands, but the marshals held her arms firm, forcing her face into the glaring sunlight as they pushed her into the back of the dark police van.

Across the street, her neighbors stood on their porches, watching in shocked silence. The very people Sylvia had spent twenty years trying to impress with her grand Christmas dinners and elite social standing were now whispering, taking videos on their phones, and watching her be driven away like a common criminal.

Her social standing was gone. Her home was a crime scene. Her son was facing decades in prison.

As the van doors slammed shut, Sylvia sank onto the hard plastic bench in the dark interior, realization finally crashing down upon her delusional mind: she had destroyed her entire family's existence in a single night of cruel arrogance.
