Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Forty-Seven

Six months later.

The Franklin County Courthouse was packed with reporters, corporate lawyers, and members of the local business community.

The story of the 'Undercover CEO' had exploded across national news. Headlines had dominated the press for weeks: Broke Handyman Husband Was Actually $16M Construction Mogul, 47 Relatives Fired in Mass Nepotism Purge, Family Facing Federal Embezzlement Charges.

I sat at the prosecution table beside Marcus Vance and the Assistant United States Attorney.

Across the room sat Martin Collins, Greg Collins, and Todd Collins, wearing plain grey suits, sitting beside their court-appointed public defenders. They had exhausted their savings trying to retain high-priced lawyers, but once their assets were frozen under the federal forfeiture order, their legal team had abandoned them.

Claire sat in the second row of the gallery behind her father, looking thin and defeated. She was living in a small two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of town, working as a junior receptionist at a local dental office—the only job she could find after her background check revealed her involvement in the corporate scandal.

The judge slammed her gavel down.

"In the matter of the State of Ohio v. Martin Collins, Greg Collins, and Todd Collins," the judge announced, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "The court has reviewed the forensic audit reports, the forged vendor invoices, and the corporate bank statements."

She looked down over her glasses at Martin.

"Mr. Collins, you operated a systematic embezzlement scheme within Whitaker Construction for over four years. You took advantage of a position of trust, exploited corporate assets for personal enrichment, and defrauded a firm that provided employment for dozens of honest workers."

Martin stood up, his voice trembling. "Your Honor... I was misled! I believed my daughter was entitled to those funds as part of her marital estate!"

"Entitled?" the judge scoffed. "You forged the signatures of senior procurement officers. You created six shell corporations to bill Whitaker Construction for work that was never performed. That is not marital property, Mr. Collins. That is grand larceny."

The judge brought her gavel down hard.

"Martin Collins, you are sentenced to seven years at the Allen Oak Correctional Institution. Greg Collins, five years. Todd Collins, four years. Full restitution of six hundred and forty thousand dollars is ordered immediately."

Shrieks broke out in the gallery. Linda Collins collapsed into her sister’s arms, weeping uncontrollably.

As the bailiffs stepped forward and clicked iron handcuffs over Martin’s wrists, he turned and looked at me one last time.

There was no arrogance left in his eyes. No 'toolbox husband' jokes. No sneers.

Only the hollow, terrifying realization that he had destroyed his own life because he couldn't respect a man in work boots.
