Chapter 8 - The Clean Slate

Two months after the trial concluded, the final divorce decree was officially issued by the family court judge.
Because Claire had signed the prenuptial agreement six years ago and had engaged in bad-faith concealment regarding her family's embezzlement scheme, the court awarded her zero spousal support, zero equity in Whitaker Construction, and zero rights to any real estate assets.
She walked out of the courtroom with only her personal clothing and a fifteen-year-old sedans that I allowed her to keep out of basic human pity.
I met Arthur, my head of human resources, in the main lobby of Whitaker Construction that afternoon.
The atmosphere in the building had completely transformed over the last eight months. The toxic culture of fear, favoritism, and nepotism that Martin’s family had brought into the firm was entirely gone.
In their place, I had promoted five hard-working field technicians—guys who had spent ten years working in the mud with real tools—to regional management positions. Salaries were restructured, fair bonuses were distributed to the line workers, and the company’s revenue had increased by thirty percent in a single quarter.
"Daniel," Sarah Lin said, walking up with a thick leather folder. "The new regional distribution center in Louisville just opened ahead of schedule. The crew wants to know if the CEO is coming to the ribbon cutting."

I smiled, taking the folder. "Tell them I'll be there. But tell them to have a pair of work boots ready. I'm checking the foundation myself."
Sarah laughed. "They wouldn't expect anything less."
