Chapter 10 - A New Warmth

The annual Hayes Family Foundation Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Four Seasons overlooking the Boston Public Garden. The room was filled with hundreds of city officials, philanthropists, and employees, all celebrating the launch of our new corporate charity initiative: The Dorothy Hayes Safe Haven Project, a non-profit dedicated to providing emergency housing and legal support for seniors facing financial or emotional abuse from their families.
I stood near the balcony, wearing a classic, emerald green silk gown that caught the light of the chandeliers. In my hand was a glass of sparkling water, my mind completely at peace.
"You look stunning, Chief Executive," a voice said beside me.
I turned to see Dorothy, looking radiant in a lavender lace dress, her diamonds sparkling under the lights. She looked healthier than she had in a decade, her posture straight and her smile genuine.
"Are you enjoying your party, Grandma?" I asked, wrapping my arm around her shoulders.
"It’s a beautiful party, Megan," she said, looking out at the crowd of people who were openly admiring her. "But more importantly, it’s warm. No more cold winds, sweetheart."

"No more cold winds," I agreed, kissing her cheek as the orchestra began to play a soft, sweeping waltz.
We walked down the grand staircase together, entering the circle of light and warmth we had built out of the ice. The family that had tried to destroy us was gone, scattered into the shadows of their own greed. But we were still here—stronger, closer, and bound by a love that no winter could ever freeze.
