Chapter 8 - The Return of the Queen

The brutal cold wave finally broke on Saturday, replaced by a soft, pale winter sun that made the snow look like a field of diamonds across Beacon Hill.
A sleek, black town car pulled up to the gates of the grand estate. I opened the door, helping Dorothy step out onto the shoveled stone walkway. She was wearing a beautiful, new cashmere coat—a gift from the board of directors—and her silver hair was styled perfectly.
She stopped at the front door, looking up at the grand brick facade. The old locks had been replaced with state-of-the-art electronic security systems, and the interior had been scrubbed clean of my parents' presence.
"It looks smaller than I remembered, Megan," she whispered, her hand resting on my arm.
"It’s yours again, Grandma," I said, pushing the heavy oak door open to reveal a warm, glowing fire crackling in the hearth, surrounded by her old friends from the neighborhood who had gathered to welcome her back.

Arthur stood near the piano, holding a glass of champagne. "Welcome home, Dorothy. The trust is fully restored. The properties are secure, and your monthly stipend has been doubled to cover the cost of a premier private nursing staff."
Dorothy let out a soft, beautiful laugh, the sound echoing through the grand hall like a silver bell. She walked into the room, surrounded by love and respect, the nightmare of that frozen porch finally fading into an insignificant memory.
