CHAPTER 2: The Two Words in Red

The silence in the back room of Il Nido was absolute. The only sound was the low, rhythmic hum of the neon sign buzzing outside the window. Vincent Torino stared down at the ledger, his heavy gold signet ring tapping against the polished mahogany table.
Underneath the names of the mother and the little girl—Elena and Lily Vance—were two words written in hurried, red ink:
"CARGO DELIVERED."
Beside it, a secondary note read: Secondary asset to be collected tonight.
Vincent’s jaw tightened. The "secondary asset" was Lily. The seven-year-old girl currently sitting in his front booth, coloring a picture of a house with a broken yellow crayon given to her by the bartender.
"Boss," Frankie whispered, leaning over the table. "That’s the Bratva’s new crew. The ones setting up shop near the docks. They don't play by the old rules. They don't care about territories, and they definitely don't care about who they snatch."
Vincent stood up, towering over his men. He slipped the crumpled five-dollar bill into his vest pocket, right over his heart. "They are in my city. They are taking mothers from my streets. And they think they are coming back for the kid tonight." He looked around the room, his eyes turning to ice. "We are going to be waiting for them."
He turned to Frankie. "Take three men. Go to the girl’s apartment. Set up a reception committee. When that white van rolls up, I don't want a single shot fired until they show their hands. Capture the drivers. I want names, and I want the location of that holding warehouse."
"And the kid, Boss?" Frankie asked.
"She stays here. Under my protection," Vincent said flatly. "If anyone so much as looks at her wrong, they answer to me."
Vincent walked out to the main dining room. Lily looked up, her large, haunted eyes locking onto his. Vincent crouched down, keeping his expression soft—a rare sight for a man who ordered executions before breakfast.
"Lily," he said softly. "My men are going to go get your mom. You're going to stay here with Marco. He’s going to make you the biggest bowl of spaghetti you’ve ever seen. Can you do that for me?"
May you like
Lily looked at him, then down at his hand, noticing the five-dollar bill was gone. "Did... did you accept my contract?"
Vincent offered a faint, grim smile. "Contract signed, kiddo. Now eat. I have a job to do."
