CHAPTER 1 — THE TABLE BY THE PLANTS

The coordinator’s tablet hovered in front of me like a door waiting to be opened.
“Mr. Miller?” she repeated politely. “We just need your approval for the premium bar extension and the upgraded dessert service.”
Behind her, the hall glittered with my money.
My mother’s seventieth birthday.
My invoice.
My silence.
I looked over at Emily and Noah.
They were sitting near the decorative plants.
Not because there was no space.
But because someone had decided they belonged there.
Emily was trying not to cry.
Noah was pretending to read his birthday card like it suddenly meant less than it did five minutes ago.
My father was laughing at a table surrounded by relatives I had paid for.
Brenda’s children clinked glasses like royalty.
And my mother—wearing the burgundy dress I bought—was glowing like none of this had a price tag attached.
The coordinator waited.
“Sir?”
I nodded slowly.
“I just want to review the final bill first.”
That didn’t worry her.
Not yet.
She handed me the digital breakdown.
Line by line.
Banquet hall: paid.
Catering: paid.
Decorations: paid.
Photography: paid.
Open bar: pending final authorization.
I tapped the screen once.
Then I saw it.
A clause at the bottom.
“Host approval required for continuation of premium services.”
I smiled slightly.
Not warmly.
Not angrily.
Just… understanding something clearly for the first time.
I looked at the coordinator.
“Give me one minute,” I said.
She nodded and stepped back.
I walked toward Sarah and the kids.
My wife looked up at me immediately.
“Ken…” she whispered. “Don’t start something.”
I didn’t answer her.
Not because I didn’t hear her.
Because for the first time in years—
May you like
I wasn’t sure I was the one starting it.
I was the one finishing it.
