CHAPTER 2 — THE SIGNATURE

I returned to the coordinator.
“I need the full authorization screen again,” I said.
She hesitated. “Sir, once you approve—”
“I haven’t approved anything yet,” I interrupted gently.
That was the first time the room felt slightly off balance.
Because I had always approved things.
That was my role.
Fixer. Payer. Quiet son.
Not anymore.
I reviewed the screen again.
Then I made a single adjustment.
Not a cancellation.
Not a refusal.
Just a reclassification.
I changed the billing responsibility structure from:
“Primary Host Account”
to
“Split Verification Pending Final Confirmation of Host Equity Contribution”
The coordinator frowned. “Sir… that will pause premium services.”
I nodded.
“That’s fine.”
Behind me, I heard Brenda’s voice rise.
“What’s he doing now?”
My father stood slightly. “Kenneth, stop playing around.”
My mother didn’t even look at me.
Because in her mind, I was still paying.
And people who pay don’t get questioned.
The coordinator cleared her throat.
“Sir, I need confirmation—do you want to proceed with partial service suspension?”
I looked back at my children.
Emily was watching me now.
No longer sad.
Just waiting.
Noah whispered, “Daddy?”
That was it.
That was the moment everything inside me stopped bending.
“Yes,” I said.
May you like
“Proceed.”
I signed.
