Chapter 12 - Gathering the Vanguard

The news of the Sterling petition spread through the community like wildfire. The ranchers and local business owners who had stood in David’s field just months ago felt the threat personally. If the Sterlings could use eminent domain to tear apart an eighteen-year-old family ranch, no one’s land was safe.

The following Saturday, David hosted an emergency meeting, not in his field, but in the town’s community center. Sheriff Tom Miller stood at the door, ensuring that only local residents entered, keeping an eye out for any corporate spies Meredith might have sent.

Over fifty people packed into the wooden pews. Frank stood by David’s side as David stepped up to the podium.

"Most of you know what’s happening," David began, his voice echoing in the hall. "Meredith Sterling is using a legal loophole to claim our lower field is an environmental hazard. She wants to build a concrete drainage system for her luxury resort project downstream. If she succeeds, my ranch loses its water source. But more than that, it sets a precedent. If they can take my land today, they can take your timberland, your pastures, and your shops tomorrow."

A murmur of angry agreement rippled through the crowd.

Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, holding up a map of the valley. "We have a strategy, but we need everyone’s help. We’ve hired Dr. Elena Vance, a renowned hydrologist from the state university. She’s agreed to conduct an independent study to prove that David’s field actually acts as a natural, healthy filter for the valley’s watershed, not a hazard. But the Sterling lawyers are trying to block her access to the public waterways bordering the properties."

"They won't block her if she’s escorted by the law," Sheriff Tom Miller spoke up, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. "The creek is public property up to the high-water mark. I’ll personally ensure Dr. Vance has all the protection she needs to get her samples."

"What about the money for the legal fees and the study?" asked Marcus, an older rancher from the northern ridge. "We know the Sterlings have endless pockets."

Before David could answer, Frank stepped up, placing a heavy, weathered hand on the podium. "David won't ask for handouts, so I’ll say it for him. This isn't just David’s fight. It’s ours. I’m putting up half my savings from the smoker business. Who’s with me?"

One by one, hands began to rise. Local bakers, mechanics, and ranchers pledged what they could. It wasn't millions, but it was real wealth—the wealth of solidarity.

Meanwhile, unknown to David, Meredith Sterling was not resting. In her penthouse office overlooking the city, she met with Marcus Vance—no relation to Elena—a ruthless corporate fixer known for making "problems" disappear.

"The locals are rallying," Meredith said, sipping a glass of wine. "They are trying to get a scientific report to counter our petition. I want that report stopped. I want David broken before he even steps into that courtroom."

Marcus Vance smiled coldly. "Consider it done, Mrs. Sterling. Every man has a price, and if they don't take the money, they usually take the hint when things start burning."
