Chapter 17 - The Confrontation at the Courthouse

The next morning, the sun rose over a scarred ranch. The hay barn was a smoldering pile of ash, and the smell of smoke hung heavy in the air. David stood in his kitchen, washed the soot from his face, and put on his only formal suit. He looked at himself in the mirror. He was exhausted, his body ached, but his eyes were filled with an unbreakable iron will.
"We go to town," David told Frank, who wore a bandage around his forehead but refused to stay behind.
The county courthouse was packed to maximum capacity. Journalists from the state capital had arrived, tipped off by Arthur Pendelton about the massive environmental scandal brewing in the small valley.
Meredith Sterling sat at the front table, flanked by a team of four high-priced corporate lawyers. She looked pristine, confident, and completely unaffected by the events of the previous night. She believed her fixer had successfully destroyed David’s spirit and that her political bribes would secure her victory.
When David walked into the courtroom, a hush fell over the crowd. The local ranchers stood up in a silent show of respect as David took his seat next to Arthur.
The Chief County Commissioner, a corrupt politician named Harold Barnes, banged his gavel. "This hearing regarding the Environmental Right-of-Way Petition filed by Sterling Holdings is now in session. We will hear from the petitioner first."
Meredith’s lead lawyer stood up, delivering a smooth, manipulative presentation filled with false charts, claiming David’s ranch was a danger to the public health and safety of the county. He spoke for an hour, portraying Meredith as a savior trying to clean up the valley.
"Thank you, counselor," Commissioner Barnes said, smirking. "Now, we will hear from the property owner, David... if he has anything of substance to present."
Arthur Pendelton stood up calmly. "Thank you, Commissioner. We have only two witnesses. First, I call Dr. Elena Vance, Senior Hydrologist."
Meredith’s lawyers immediately objected. "Dr. Vance’s data is unverified and uncorroborated!"
"It is perfectly verified," Arthur countered, slipping a flash drive into the courtroom’s projector system. "And thanks to encrypted cloud backups, the data survived an attempted destruction last night."
The projector flickered to life, displaying a massive array of scientific data, water test results, and satellite mapping. Dr. Vance took the stand, her voice clear and authoritative as she laid bare the truth: Meredith’s own resort development was the source of chemical contamination, and the petition was a fraudulent attempt to seize David’s land to build an illegal filtration dump.
The courtroom erupted into whispers. Commissioner Barnes turned pale, looking nervously at Meredith.

"This is absurd! This is a lie!" Meredith yelled, losing her composure and standing up. "My family built this town! You cannot believe this farmer over me!"
"Sit down, Mrs. Sterling," the Commissioner pleaded, his voice shaking. He knew the cameras were rolling and his political career was dying in real-time.
