Five years later, the summer in West Virginia was a spectacular explosion of green and gold.
The Calder Community Clinic was thriving, and the newly renamed Wells-Bellini Bakery had become a local landmark, drawing visitors from all over the state.
I stood on the porch of our new mountain home, a beautiful stone and cedar lodge that overlooked the valley.
Sophia and Chloe—now eight years old—were running through the tall grass of the meadow, their laughter sweet and clear as they chased a golden retriever puppy. Leo was holding a small wooden train, his amber eyes bright with a quiet, focused happiness as he built a track along the stone wall.
Beside me, Marco stood, his arm wrapped tightly around my waist, his bare hand resting on my hip.
"They're growing up too fast, Elena," he whispered, his head leaning down to kiss my forehead.
"They are," I smiled, leaning back against his chest. "But they’re safe. That’s all that matters."
