Chapter 8 - The Trust Restored

By the third week, the legal battle in Chicago had reached its conclusion.
A team of high-powered attorneys from Munich—sent by the Von Bernberg family trust, who had heard of Elena’s situation through their mutual business connections—arrived in Gray Hollow with a massive leather folder of documents.
They sat at the large oak table in the bakery’s back room, surrounded by the smell of fresh bread and the warm light of the afternoon sun.
"The Vanguard trust has been fully consolidated under your name, Elena," the lead attorney, a sharp-faced German named Karl, explained. "Clara’s shares have been seized by the state of Illinois as part of the asset forfeiture following her arrest for conspiracy and attempted murder. The forty million dollars is entirely secure, and the twins are listed as the sole beneficiaries."
Elena looked at the documents, her eyes tracing the familiar signature of her father at the bottom of the page.
"And my sister?" she asked.
"She is currently awaiting trial in a federal facility in Chicago," Karl said. "Her lawyers are trying to secure a plea deal, but given the evidence of her involvement in the Scottsdale clinic incident and the local sheriff’s testimony from West Virginia, she is looking at a minimum of twenty years."
Elena let out a long, slow sigh. The weight that had been on her chest for three years—the constant, exhausting fear of being found, of being erased—was finally gone.
"Thank you, Karl," she said.
"Do not thank me, Elena," Karl smiled, packing his papers. "Thank your husband. He was the one who authorized the cross-claims and funded the forensic audit that broke her defense."
Elena turned her head to look through the small glass window of the back room.

Out in the main lobby, Marco was sitting on the floor with Mila and Leo, helping them build a massive fortress out of wooden blocks. His expensive wool coat was folded neatly over a chair, his sleeves rolled up, revealing the strong, scarred skin of his forearms.
He looked completely at peace. The dangerous, feared crime boss of Chicago had been replaced by a father who was entirely content to have his castle knocked down by a three-year-old girl.
