Chapter 16 - Shadows of the Past

Friday morning brought a heavy rainstorm over downtown Chicago. Inside Courtroom 1804 of the Cook County Chancery Court, the atmosphere was dense with tension.
Richard Sterling sat at the defense table alongside four top-tier corporate defense attorneys. Across the aisle, Victoria Vance sat beside me and Julian, looking as regal and composed as a general before battle.
Judge Harrison, a stern woman in her sixties, tapped her gavel to bring the room to order. "We are here on the emergency petition by Vanguard Apex Holdings regarding the asset freeze of Taylor Tech Strategies. Ms. Vance, you filed a motion to dismiss with prejudice. State your grounds."
Victoria stood up, adjusting her suit jacket. "Your Honor, Vanguard Apex’s claim is built entirely on fraudulent documentation. They allege that Daniel Walker funneled $1.2 million of their funds into my client's business four years ago. However, we have submitted certified banking records proving that the $1.2 million in question was actually stolen from Emily Taylor’s late parents' estate by Daniel Walker himself."
Sterling’s lead attorney stood up immediately. "Objection! Those bank records are unverified!"
"They are verified by the Federal Reserve, counsel," Victoria replied coldly, handing a sealed document to the bailiff. "Furthermore, late last night, an illegal attempt was made to steal Taylor Tech Strategies' intellectual property. The stolen data contained a federal tracking protocol that logged an active download attempt originating from Mr. Sterling's personal residence in Lake Forest two hours ago."
The courtroom went dead silent.
Judge Harrison looked over her glasses at Richard Sterling. "Is this true, Mr. Sterling?"
Sterling stood up, his face flushed with anger, ignoring his attorney’s frantic attempts to tug on his sleeve. "This girl built her company on money that belonged to my firm! Daniel Walker was a thief, and she was his accomplice!"
"I was his victim, Richard," I said, standing up from my seat, my voice echoing clearly through the high-arched courtroom. "And when I walked away from him, I rebuilt my life with my own intellect, my own sweat, and the support of people who believe in honesty. You are the thief who hid behind him."
"Order in the court!" Judge Harrison slammed her gavel down firmly. "Mr. Sterling, sit down before I hold you in summary contempt!"
Judge Harrison reviewed the documents presented by Victoria for three tense minutes. The only sound in the room was the tapping of rain against the high stained-glass windows.

Finally, Judge Harrison raised her head. "The court finds that Vanguard Apex Holdings has engaged in bad-faith litigation and predatory legal abuse. The petition for an asset freeze is denied. Furthermore, I am referring the evidence of corporate espionage and stolen intellectual property directly to the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois for immediate criminal indictment."
She struck her gavel. "Court is adjourned."
