Chapter 19 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Two months later, early autumn had arrived in Chicago, painting the trees along Lincoln Park in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and deep crimson.
The legal storm had completely passed. Richard Sterling pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud, attempted corporate espionage, and arson conspiracy, receiving a twelve-year sentence in federal prison. David, the former analyst who betrayed us, accepted a plea deal that included full restitution and three years of probation.
At Taylor Tech Strategies, the atmosphere was triumphant. We had expanded our team to sixteen full-time employees, secured two major enterprise accounts in New York, and officially launched our new secure cloud platform.
More importantly, the West Loop real estate portfolio seized from Sterling had been officially transferred to the Haven House Foundation. The commercial building was converted into a state-of-the-art vocational training center where survivors of financial abuse could learn software development, accounting, and legal rights for free.
I stood on the second-floor balcony of the new training center, watching Sarah conduct the first orientation class for twenty women.
Victoria stepped up beside me, handing me a glass of sparkling apple cider. "Not bad for a project that started as a dream in your kitchen two years ago."
"We did it, Victoria," I smiled, clinking my glass against hers. "They have a real chance now."
"You gave them that chance, Emily," Victoria said warmly. "And by the way, the Chancery court officially dissolved Vanguard Apex Holdings this morning. The case is permanently closed."
Julian walked up behind us, carrying a large cardboard box filled with brand-new laptop computers for the students. He set the box down, wiped his brow, and pulled me into a side embrace.
"All hardware is configured and ready for the afternoon coding lab, boss," Julian grinned teasingly.

"Thank you, lead consultant," I laughed, kissing his cheek. "What would I do without you?"
"You'd probably run the world by yourself," Julian murmured softly, his eyes filled with infinite devotion. "But I'm glad I get to watch."
