Chapter 2 - The Uninvited Host

Downstairs, the party was at its peak.

My brother Michael was standing near the grand marble fireplace, holding a crystal glass filled with thirty-year-old Scotch from my private collection—a bottle worth six thousand dollars that I had saved for my father’s memory. My mother, Margaret, was wearing a double-strand South Sea pearl necklace I had bought for Emily's last birthday, laughing loudly with three women from the local country club.

"Oh, yes," Margaret was boasting, fanning herself with an ivory fan. "Daniel is far too busy with his international ventures to manage these domestic details. He trusts me completely to maintain our family's social standing in Beverly Hills. After all, a man of his stature needs a proper matriarch to run his estate."

"And what about his wife?" one of the women asked politely. "We rarely see Emily at these luncheons."

Margaret scoffed softly, taking a sip of wine. "Emily is... well, she comes from very humble origins, dear. She lacks the refinement for these gatherings. She prefers to keep to herself in the back. It’s really for her own comfort."

"Is that what you told them, Mother?"

My voice cut through the background classical music like a razor blade.

The dining room fell into an immediate, suffocating silence. The string quartet stopped playing. Dozens of high-society guests turned around to face the grand staircase.

I stood on the landing, descending the marble steps slowly, my hand sliding along the golden handrail.

Margaret dropped her glass. It shattered against the polished hardwood, dark red wine soaking into a twenty-thousand-dollar Persian rug. "Daniel!" she gasped, clutching her chest. "You're... you're home early! Why didn't you call? We would have prepared a proper welcome!"

"A proper welcome?" I asked, reaching the bottom of the stairs. "Like the one you gave my wife in the service kitchen?"

Michael froze, his face losing all color. Ashley stepped out from the hallway shadow behind him, frantically shaking her head at her mother to signal that the game was up.

"Daniel, darling, you're misunderstanding—" Margaret began, taking a step toward me with her arms outstretched.

"Do not take another step toward me, Margaret," I said, using her first name for the first time in my life.

The guests began to whisper nervously among themselves. Margaret’s face flushed red with embarrassment. "Daniel! How dare you address your mother like that in front of our guests!"

"These aren't your guests. This isn't your house. And those aren't your pearls," I said coldly. I looked around the room, meeting the eyes of the twenty wealthy socialites gathered in my home. "Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the disruption to your evening. But this celebration is over. Please leave my home immediately."

"Daniel, stop this!" Michael snapped, trying to save face in front of his wealthy associates. "You're embarrassing the family! Mother organized this charity drive for—"

"Michael," I interrupted, pulling my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen twice. "Your signature was logged on four offshore transfers totaling three million dollars from my commercial development fund over the last eighteen months. The LAPD financial crimes division and my private security team are currently waiting at the main gates."

A collective gasp swept through the room. Several guests immediately began gathering their coats and bags, desperate to avoid being caught in a high-profile legal scandal.

"Out. All of you," I commanded.

Within five minutes, the room was cleared of outsiders. Only my mother, my sister Ashley, her husband Greg, and my brother Michael remained. They stood in the center of the ruined dining room, surrounded by half-eaten lobster tails and empty champagne bottles, looking at me like cornered animals.

"Daniel," Margaret said, her voice shifting from haughty authority to fake, tearful maternal devotion. "How could you treat us like this? After everything I sacrificed to raise you? We were only trying to protect your assets! Emily is naive! She would have let managers ruin you!"

"Emily was the only person who believed in me when I lived in a basement," I said, walking to the head of the dining table. "You only came back into my life when the first news article called me a multi-millionaire."

I plugged the black thumb drive into my laptop, which was sitting on the sideboard, and connected it to the room's giant media screen.

A massive spreadsheet filled the display, listing thousands of transactions, bank account numbers, forged signatures, and security camera footage timestamps.

"This is the complete audit of my accounts over the last five years," I said, pointing to the screen. "You didn't just steal my money, Mother. You forged legal power of attorney documents while I was recovering from surgery in London three years ago. You diverted forty-two million dollars into private trusts."

Ashley turned pale. "Daniel... please. We're your blood!"

"Blood doesn't make you family," I said. "And starting tonight, you're all broke."
