Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

Monday morning arrived clear and cold over Los Angeles.

The construction site of Apex Tower in downtown LA was dead silent. Two hundred construction workers stood outside the high iron gates, holding signboards and demanding their unpaid wages.

Michael stood inside the site manager’s trailer, sweating through his expensive shirt, frantically checking his phone. The ten million dollars he thought he had secured from Victor Thorne hadn't arrived in his account.

Suddenly, the doors of the trailer burst open.

Three men in dark suits walked in, led by my attorney, David Sterling. Behind them stood two uniformed officers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

"Michael Cole?" Sterling asked.

Michael jumped up, his hands shaking. "Where is my money?! Thorne promised the wire would hit by 8:00 AM!"

"Mr. Thorne's accounts were frozen two hours ago by federal agents for money laundering," Sterling informed him with a razor-thin smile. "Furthermore, Cole Holdings purchased the primary debt mortgage for Apex Tower from Vanguard Credit on Friday."

Michael’s phone slipped from his fingers, bouncing off the linoleum floor. "What?"

"You are in default of your loan obligations in the amount of forty-two million dollars," Sterling continued, handing him a thick legal packet. "As the sole debt holder, Cole Holdings is exercising its legal right to immediate non-judicial foreclosure. You are hereby ordered to vacate these premises immediately."

"You can't do this!" Michael screamed, grabbing Sterling by the lapels. "This is my project! I built this!"

The two sheriff’s deputies immediately stepped forward, grabbing Michael’s arms and forcing him back against the wall.

"Don't make this worse for yourself, sir," one deputy warned.

At that exact moment, a sleek black Maybach pulled up outside the construction trailer. The driver opened the rear door, and Emily stepped out, dressed in an elegant navy coat, holding a leather document case.

She walked into the trailer with light, confident steps. The construction managers and deputies stepped aside, giving her room.

Michael stared at her, his eyes wide with disbelief and burning hatred. "Emily? What are you doing here?"

Emily walked up to the desk, pulled out a signed court order, and laid it flat in front of him.

"I am the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Apex Development," Emily said, her voice clear, strong, and completely devoid of fear. "And as my first official act, Michael, I am terminating your employment, revoking your access to all project assets, and seizing your personal vehicles."

Michael scoffed, trying to hide his humiliation. "You? CEO? You don't know anything about real estate! You're nothing without my brother!"

"I spent five years watching how you managed money, Michael," Emily said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "And I realized that a middle-school child could run a business better than you. You lost thirty million dollars of stolen money in eighteen months. You aren't a developer. You're just a thief who got caught."

Before Michael could respond, the sound of police sirens echoed from the street outside. Three black unmarked sedans pulled up behind the Maybach.

Detective Marcus Vance of the LAPD Financial Crimes Unit stepped out, accompanied by four investigators.

"Michael Cole?" Detective Vance announced, entering the trailer. "You are under arrest for grand theft, corporate embezzlement, and criminal conspiracy."

As the steel handcuffs clicked around Michael’s wrists, he looked frantically at Emily. "Tell Daniel to stop this! Emily, please! Talk to him!"

Emily turned her back on him and walked out toward the construction workers waiting outside. She picked up a megawatt loudspeaker from the site manager’s desk.

"Attention everyone!" Emily announced, her voice carrying over the crowded street. "Apex Development is under new management! All unpaid wages will be wired to your accounts by 2:00 PM today, and work on this building will resume tomorrow morning!"

The crowd of two hundred workers erupted into wild cheers and applause.

From across the street, sitting inside my SUV, I watched my wife command the crowd with grace and authority. The broken woman from the service kitchen was gone forever.
