Chapter 5: The Legal Battle

Three months later, the corporate high-rises of the federal district court loomed over the city. Daniel sat in a sterile conference room, dressed in a sharp civilian suit. Beside him were his legal counsel and Clara.
The investigation had revealed a labyrinth of corruption. Margaret and Caleb hadn't just targeted Daniel's trust; they had been running a systematic financial fraud ring for years, using Margaret’s high society status to swindle elderly residents out of their estates. Sheriff Miller had been taking a massive cut to bury complaints.
The autopsy report had been definitive: Emily had died of asphyxiation induced by chemical sedation, not childbirth complications. The baby had been delivered via an emergency post-mortem procedure performed by a disgraced medical student Caleb had hired—a horrific detail that made Daniel's knuckles turn white every time he thought about it. Leo’s survival was nothing short of a miracle.
The door opened, and his attorney, Evelyn Reed, walked in with a thick stack of papers. She had a victorious smile on her face.
"It’s over, Daniel," Evelyn said, sitting down. "The state prosecutor just finalized the plea deals. Caleb cracked completely under the pressure of federal conspiracy and first-degree murder charges. He testified against his mother to avoid the death penalty. He’s looking at life without parole."
"And Margaret?" Daniel asked.
"She tried to plead insanity, but the FBI found her personal journals detailing the entire plan weeks before you returned. She’s been sentenced to life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary with zero chance of clemency. The judge made a special note during sentencing, calling her actions 'an act of pure, unadulterated malice against a defender of this nation.'"
Daniel let out a long breath he felt like he had been holding for nearly a year. The legal war was won. His wife’s murderers would spend the rest of their natural lives behind bars.
"What about the estate and the trust?" Clara asked.
"Fully restored," Evelyn replied, sliding a document over. "Every cent stolen has been seized from Margaret's hidden assets and returned to the military trust. The house is officially cleared of any legal liens. It belongs entirely to you and Leo."
Daniel looked at the document, but his mind wasn't on the money. "I'm selling the house, Evelyn. There are too many ghosts there. Emily deserves a place where her memory can breathe, not where it was suffocated."

"I think that’s a wonderful idea, Daniel," Clara said, reaching out to squeeze his hand. "Where will you go?"
"Near the coast," Daniel said, a faint glimmer of peace in his eyes. "Emily always wanted a house where she could hear the ocean. She said the sound of the waves could cure any sadness."
