Chapter 6 - The Infiltration Attempt

While Carmen remained locked behind bars awaiting her preliminary bail hearing, the ripples of her malicious network had not fully dissipated.

Carmen had a sister—my Aunt Evelyn—who lived in San Diego. Unlike Uncle Richard, Evelyn was just like Carmen: vain, bitter, and deeply dependent on family clout. Having heard of Carmen’s arrest, Evelyn flew to Phoenix, convinced that she could intimidate Jessica into dropping the criminal charges before the grand jury convened.

Two weeks after the incident, Jessica and Olivia were finally home. I had taken an indefinite leave of absence from my project management job, hiring top-tier private security to guard our apartment floor and devoting every single hour to taking care of my wife and daughter.

We were slowly healing. Olivia was beginning to laugh again, painted with soft watercolors instead of washing dishes, and slept between Jessica and me every night.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon while I was at the grocery store down the street, the doorbell rang.

Jessica, carrying a security monitor I had installed, looked at the screen. She saw an elderly woman dressed in a coat, holding a large basket of flowers and teddy bears.

Assuming it was a delivery from Uncle Richard, who was scheduled to arrive the next day, Jessica unlocked the heavy deadbolt and opened the door slightly, keeping the security chain engaged.

"Can I help you?" Jessica asked softly.

Instantly, the woman rammed her boot into the door frame, preventing it from closing!

"You ungrateful little viper!" Evelyn hissed, pushing her face against the crack of the door, her eyes bulging with venom. "You destroyed my sister’s life! You framed her! Carmen spent her whole life sacrificing for Zayden, and you turned him against his own blood!"

Jessica staggered back in terror, her hands shaking, triggering an immediate panic flashback to the months of abuse. "Get away from me! Leave us alone!"

"Listen to me, you pathetic weakling!" Evelyn screamed, shoving her weight against the door, trying to snap the chain. "You are going to sign an affidavit stating you lied to the police! You are going to tell the court that the burns were an accident caused by your own negligence! If you don't, I will make sure the public knows what an incompetent mother you are! I'll ruin you!"

From the bedroom, five-year-old Olivia heard the screaming. But instead of hiding under the bed as she used to do, the little girl remembered what I had taught her over the past two weeks.

“If anyone ever scares Mommy or you, push the big red button on the wall.”

Olivia ran to the living room wall unit, reached up on her tiptoes, and slammed her palm down on the red emergency security alarm button!

A deafening 110-decibel siren roared through the apartment complex, echoing down the hallways and flashing bright strobe lights outside the door.

At that exact moment, the elevator doors at the end of the hall dinged open. I stepped out carrying two bags of groceries.

Hearing the blaring security alarm and seeing a strange woman trying to force her way through my front door, absolute rage exploded through my veins. I dropped the groceries and sprinted down the hallway like a lightning bolt.

Before Evelyn could react, I grabbed her by the collar of her coat and ripped her away from the door, throwing her onto the carpeted floor of the corridor.

"Get your hands off me!" Evelyn shrieked, sprawling on the floor. "I am your aunt!"

"I don't care who you are!" I roared, standing over her like an absolute demon, my fists clenched. "You step near my wife or my child again, and I will personally see to it that you share a cell right next to Carmen!"

Two armed private security guards whom I had hired for the building came rushing down the hall, weapons drawn, alongside the building management staff.

"Secure this woman!" I commanded the guards. "She attempted forced entry and threatened my family!"

Evelyn was pinned to the floor by the security guards, sobbing and screaming curses as the Phoenix police were called for the second time in two weeks.

I rushed inside, slamming the heavy door shut, locking every bolt, and pulled Jessica and Olivia tightly into my arms. Jessica was shaking violently, but Olivia looked up at me, her small, bandaged hand gripping my shirt tightly.

"Daddy," Olivia whispered, her voice surprisingly steady. "I pushed the red button. I protected Mommy."

Tears streamed down my face as I kissed my daughter's forehead. "You were so brave, my little hero. You saved the day."
