Chapter 7 - The Grand Jury Indictment

The following month was a grueling, relentless legal battle.

Aunt Evelyn was swiftly charged with attempted burglary, harassment, and witness intimidation, slapped with a strict restraining order, and forced to post a hefty bail before fleeing back to California in disgrace.

Meanwhile, the grand jury convened for Carmen’s criminal trial.

Thanks to the mountain of undisputed evidence—the forensic medical photos, the red ledger, the intercepted phone calls from jail where she tried to pressure family members, and the testimony of Uncle Richard regarding the stolen trust fund—the grand jury issued a 12-count indictment against Carmen Ferris.

The bail hearing was held in the Maricopa County Superior Court.

Carmen appeared in a orange jumpsuit, her hair unkempt, her wrists chained to her waist belt. Without her expensive clothes, her makeup, and her stage-managed persona, she looked pathetically diminished—a desperate, bitter woman stripped of her illusions of control.

Her high-priced public defender tried to argue for release on home electronic monitoring, citing her age and alleged "severe knee pain."

"Your Honor," the defense attorney pleaded, "my client is a 62-year-old grandmother with no prior criminal record. She poses no flight risk and requires specialized medical care for her deteriorating joints."

Eleanor Vance, representing our family as victim advocates alongside the State Prosecutor, stepped forward to the podium.

"Your Honor," Vance argued, her voice echoing through the grand courtroom. "The defendant used her alleged 'frailty' as a weapon to torment a defenceless five-year-old child and a vulnerable woman for over a year. Furthermore, we have submitted financial evidence proving she embezzled over one million dollars from her late husband’s trust fund and maintained hidden bank accounts. She has the financial means to flee and zero remorse for her barbaric actions."

The prosecutor presented the court with the red ledger.

Judge Harrison, a stern woman with decades of judicial experience, read through the highlighted pages of the ledger. Her jaw tightened as she looked down from her bench at Carmen.

"Mrs. Ferris," Judge Harrison said, her voice dropping like an iron gavel. "The contents of this journal demonstrate a level of calculated cruelty that borders on sadistic. You transformed a family home into a torture chamber for your own grandchild."

"It's all lies, Your Honor!" Carmen suddenly blurted out, breaking court decorum, her voice screeching across the courtroom. "My son is being controlled by that useless wife of his! I am the victim here! I gave up my life for him!"

"Silence!" Judge Harrison barked, slamming her gavel. "Bail is denied. The defendant will remain in custody until trial."

As the bailiffs grabbed Carmen’s arms to lead her away, her eyes locked onto mine where I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Uncle Richard.

"Zayden!" she screamed, her voice cracking with desperation and hatred. "How can you do this to your mother?! You will burn in hell for this! You hear me?! I curse the day you were born!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't blink. I simply looked at her with total, unyielding detachment.

"Take her away," I said quietly.
