Chapter 3 - The Doctor’s Verdict

The study was vast, lined from floor to ceiling with leather-bound books that smelled of old paper, tobacco, and expensive brandy. A roaring fire crackled in the massive stone hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across a grand mahogany desk. Standing by the fire was an elderly man with silver hair and a sharp, discerning gaze, holding a black medical bag.

"Marco," the old man said, his voice thick with a heavy Sicilian accent. "Thank God the child is whole. The news from the café... it is bad. Giovanni is dead, and three of our soldiers are in the morgue."

"We will handle the Moretti family later, Alberto," Marco said, waving his hand dismissively as he gestured toward Lena, who was sitting carefully on a leather sofa, still holding Aria. "Tend to the woman. She took a fragment to the deltoid."

Doctor Alberto Romano walked over, his eyes scanning Lena with a mixture of professional curiosity and profound respect. He knelt before her, gently peeling back the blood-soaked fabric of her uniform shirt. Aria watched every movement with wide, unblinking eyes, her small hand locked around Lena’s thumb.

"A clean graze," the doctor muttered after examining the wound with practiced hands. "The heat of the round cauterized the worst of the vessels, but it requires six stitches to close the tearing and a heavy course of antibiotics. You were very lucky, young lady. A two-inch shift to the left, and you would have bled out on the kitchen tile."

"I didn't think about it," Lena whispered, her face pale as the adrenaline finally began to drain from her system, leaving behind a deep, bone-crushing fatigue. "I just saw her standing there."

"She did more than save her life, Alberto," Marco said from the shadows near the window, his eyes fixed on the fire. "She made Aria speak."

The doctor froze, his needle suspended above Lena’s skin. He looked up at Marco, his silver eyebrows rising nearly to his hairline. "Speak? What did she say?"

"She called her Mommy," Marco said, the word sounding heavy and foreign coming from his mouth.

Doctor Romano looked down at Aria, his expression softening into something incredibly grave. He reached out, gently patting the little girl’s knee. "Ah, la piccolina. The mind is a strange fortress, Miss Moore. When Aria lost her mother in the bombing at the villa two years ago, she locked the doors to her voice and threw away the key. She chose silence because the world was too loud, too cruel. Today, you became the shield that kept the cruelty away. To her, you are not a stranger. You are the return of the protection she lost."

"But I’m not her mother," Lena protested, winced as the doctor began the first stitch. She bit her lip, refusing to cry out in front of the intimidating man watching her from the corner. "My name is Lena. I have a cat, a tiny apartment on 4th Street, and three months left on my student loans. I can't be what she needs."

"You already are what she needs," Marco said, stepping out of the shadows. He walked over to the sofa, standing over them like a towering monolith. "The Moretti family knows who you are. My intelligence network informs me that they have already sent men to your apartment building. They found your name from the café's payroll records. Your apartment has been ransacked, Miss Moore. If you go back there, you die. If you leave this house without my protection, you die."

Lena’s heart slammed against her ribs. "My cat... Romeo..."

"My men have already retrieved the animal," Marco said smoothly, gesturing to the door. "He is currently in the conservatory being fed fresh salmon by my staff. I do not leave loose ends, Lena. And I do not allow people who bleed for my family to be hunted like dogs."

He sat down in the leather chair opposite her, leaning forward, his hands clasped between his knees. "Here are the terms. You will live here, in the east wing. You will have a salary that matches what you would earn in five years at that café, paid every month into an offshore account. Your only duty is to remain by my daughter’s side, to keep her safe, and to let her believe whatever her mind needs to believe to stay whole. You will be her shadow. And my soldiers will be yours."

Lena looked at Aria, who had leaned her head against Lena’s uninjured shoulder, her breathing slowing as she drifted back into a secure sleep. She looked at the blood on her apron, then up at the mafia boss whose eyes held the weight of a thousand violent secrets.

"And what happens when she realizes I'm a lie?" Lena asked quietly.

Marco’s eyes darkened, the firelight catching the sharp planes of his face. "Then we pray that by that time, I have killed every man who made the truth so dangerous."
