Chapter 10 - The Vow Under the Orchid Dome

The glass dome of the conservatory was illuminated by ten thousand small, twinkling fairy lights that looked like a fallen galaxy captured within the crystal panes. The scent of blooming jasmine and midnight orchids was thick in the warm evening air.

Standing in the center of the marble floor was a small circle of friends—Doctor Romano, wearing his finest Sicilian suit, Robert Sterling, who had handled the legal transition of the DeSantis empire, and a few close associates who had survived the transition from the old world to the new.

At the head of the aisle stood Marco. He wore a simple, tailored black suit, his green eyes fixed on the entrance with an intensity that made the entire room feel still.

The music began—a soft, acoustic melody played on a classical guitar. Walking down the path first was Aria, wearing a pale pink dress with a basket of white rose petals, her face glowing with pure, unadulterated happiness. She dropped the petals with careful precision, looking back at her father with a triumphant nod.

Then came Lena.

She wore a gown of pure, ivory silk that swept across the marble floor like water. The high collar was gone, replaced by an elegant off-the-shoulder neckline that proudly displayed the small white scar on her deltoid—not as a blemish, but as the medal of honor that had earned her this family. Her hair was swept up, held in place by the same diamond comb Marco had given her for the crimson banquet.

She walked without fear. She walked with the grace of a woman who knew she belonged exactly where she was going.

When she reached Marco, he took both of her hands in his, his large, warm palms enclosing hers completely. His hands were still scarred, still rough from the history of his life, but as he looked down at her, they were the gentlest things in the world.

"I, Marco DeSantis, take you, Lena Moore, to be my wife," he said, his voice deep, steady, and vibrating with an emotion that filled every corner of the glass dome. "I spent my life building walls to keep the world out, believing that the only way to protect my blood was through iron and blood. You walked through the gunfire with nothing but your courage, and you showed me that the greatest fortress is the one built by love. I vow to protect you, to cherish you, and to stand as your shield against any storm that dares to blow toward our gate."

Lena looked into his green eyes, her own eyes misting with tears of profound, beautiful joy.

"I, Lena Moore, take you, Marco DeSantis, to be my husband," she whispered, her voice clear and strong. "I was a girl waiting for my life to start, hiding behind tables and numbers. You and Aria gave me a reason to be brave. You gave me a home where I am no longer just a shadow running from the dark. I vow to stand by your side, to hold your hand through the quiet days and the loud nights, and to be the anchor that keeps our castle whole."

Doctor Romano stepped forward, his eyes shining with silver tears as he raised his hands over their joined fingers. "By the power vested in me by the old laws of the blood and the new laws of the heart, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Marco... you may kiss your queen."

Marco leaned in, his arms wrapping around her waist, lifting her slightly off the marble floor as his lips met hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their survival, their victory, and their eternal peace.

Aria let out a loud, joyful cheer, dropping her entire basket of rose petals into the air before throwing herself against their legs. Romeo, the orange tabby, let out a soft meow from his velvet cushion near the ferns, his tail flicking contentedly against the warm glass.

Outside the estate, the city of Chicago moved through its summer night—loud, busy, and oblivious to the transition. The black iron gates stood wide, the security guards wore simple suits instead of tactical gear, and the crest of the phoenix on the wall no longer meant a rising from the ashes of a war.

It meant the beginning of a life that had started with a waitress running into the gunfire, and had ended with a family that no storm would ever be strong enough to break.
