Chapter 3 - The Socialite's Panic

While Daniel was being escorted from Vale Meridian Tower by federal marshals, forty miles away in the affluent suburb of Oak Brook, Celeste Arden was sitting in her sun-drenched sunroom, sipping an iced latte while reviewing her Instagram feed.
Her page was flooded with comments from the previous night's gala. Pictures of her in her emerald-green silk gown, standing beneath crystal chandeliers, cutting a four-tier gold-leaf birthday cake alongside Daniel, had generated thousands of likes.
“Power couple!” one comment read.
“When are you two making it official?!” another user posted.
Celeste smiled, admiring her manicured nails. For two years, she had carefully maneuvered Daniel. She had listened to his endless rants about his "boring, plain" wife, stroked his fragile ego, and convinced him that a man of his stature deserved a partner who matched his high-society ambitions.
Her phone rang. It was her manager at the Arden Cultural Foundation.
"Celeste!" her manager gasped, his voice tight with panic. "Have you checked your banking portal this morning?!"
Celeste frowned, setting her coffee cup down on a marble coaster. "No, why? Did Daniel’s secondary transfer for the gala production team clear?"
"No! It didn't clear!" her manager shrieked. "The entire foundation operating account has been frozen under a federal court injunction! The bank says there’s an emergency corporate audit hold placed on every transaction associated with CA Global!"
Celeste’s heart skipped a beat. "What are you talking about?! Daniel assured me those accounts were completely private!"
"Well, they aren't private anymore!" he yelled. "And that’s not all! Look at the morning business news right now!"
Celeste snatched her tablet from the glass table and pulled up the Chicago Financial Chronicle.
The front-page banner headline in bold red letters made her breath catch in her throat:
VALE MERIDIAN CEO DANIEL VALE FIRED MID-MEETING OVER MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME; STERLING HEIR ELENA VALE ASSUMES FULL CONTROL OF TRUST ASSETS.
Below the headline was a crystal-clear photograph of Daniel being escorted out of the building by federal marshals, looking disheveled, furious, and defeated.
"No... no, no, no," Celeste whispered, her hands trembling so violently she almost dropped the tablet. "This is an error. Daniel told me his wife was just an unemployed accountant who didn't care about the business!"
Before she could process the news, her front doorbell rang—a sharp, persistent chime that echoed through her multi-million-dollar home.
Celeste rushed to the foyer, smoothing her silk robe, expecting Daniel to be standing on the porch with an explanation.
She pulled open the door.
Standing on her porch were two uniformed county sheriffs, accompanied by a female process server holding a stack of legal documents and an eviction notice.
"Celeste Arden?" the process server asked neutrally.
"Yes... what is the meaning of this?!" Celeste demanded, backing away slightly.
"You are being formally served with a Civil Recovery Lawsuit filed by the Sterling Family Trust for Intentional Conversion of Stolen Corporate Funds, Fraudulent Conveyance, and Unjust Enrichment," the woman announced, handing her the heavy envelope.
"Stolen funds?!" Celeste shrieked. "Daniel gave me those gifts! They were personal business investments!"
"Furthermore," the sheriff stepped forward, tapping a paper pinned to a wooden board, "this residential property located at 1044 Whispering Oaks Lane was purchased using an offshore holding company owned entirely by Vale Meridian. As of nine o'clock this morning, the property has been seized under a pre-judgment writ of attachment. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises."
"Forty-eight hours?!" Celeste screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. "I have eighty guests coming here for a post-birthday brunch tomorrow! You can't throw me out of my home!"
"It isn't your home, Ms. Arden," the officer replied coldly. "It’s property of the Sterling Trust. I suggest you start packing."
Just as the officers turned to walk down the stone driveway, a silver sedan pulled up to the curb.
Daniel stumbled out of the passenger seat, having taken a rideshare after his corporate credit cards were declined at the parking garage. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, his eyes wide with desperate rage.
"Celeste!" Daniel yelled, hurrying up the steps. "Did you see what she did?! That crazy bitch frozen everything! My accounts, my cars, my office—she took everything!"
Celeste looked at the man standing before her. Without his tailored suit, his Maybach, his corporate title, and his endless supply of company money, he looked small, pathetic, and utterly ruined.
"Daniel," Celeste said, her voice dropping into an icy, venomous register. "Where is the four hundred thousand dollars for the Aston Martin payment?"
"What?!" Daniel gasped, blinking in confusion. "Celeste, didn't you hear me?! She seized my entire bank network! I don't have access to a single dollar!"
Celeste looked at the legal papers in her hand, then back at Daniel.
"Then get off my porch," she stated flatly.
"What?!" Daniel stumbled back, looking at her as if she had struck him. "Celeste, I sacrificed my marriage for you! I brought you into my life! I gave you millions!"
"You didn't give me millions, Daniel," Celeste sneered, stepping back inside her foyer and grasping the edge of the heavy oak door. "You stole millions from your wife's family, got caught like an amateur, and brought federal marshals to my doorstep. You are a broke, ruined fraud."
"Celeste, please!" Daniel begged, reaching out to catch the door. "We can fight this together! I still have contacts in Miami—"
"Lose my number, Daniel," Celeste spat.

She slammed the heavy oak door straight in his face, the lock clicking sharply into place.
Daniel stood alone on the porch under the autumn sun, the cold wind blowing rustling leaves across his feet. The glittering world of luxury, status, and adoration he had spent six years building had vanished in less than four hours.
