Chapter 4 - The Nursery Fortress

Back at Saint Jude’s Women and Children’s Hospital, the atmosphere in room 402 was calm, quiet, and filled with gentle light.

I was sitting in a comfortable armchair near the window, holding my tiny son, Leo, close to my chest. Beside my chair, resting safely in a double transparent crib, were my twin daughters, Maya and Harper. Their skin had transformed into a healthy, rosy pink; their breathing was steady and strong without the assistance of oxygen lines.

The door pushed open gently, and Dr. Patel walked in carrying a clipboard, a warm, genuine smile on her face.

"How is our champion mother doing today?" Dr. Patel asked softly, checking the monitors beside the cribs.

"We are feeling strong, Doctor," I smiled, gently rubbing Leo’s soft head. "When do they get to come home?"

"Their weight gain over the last forty-eight hours has been remarkable, Elena," Dr. Patel replied, her eyes bright with professional pride. "Their lungs are fully expanded, and their suction reflexes are excellent. If this progress continues, we can discharge all three of them by Friday morning."

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Arthur Vance stepped in, carrying a thin leather folder. He looked at the babies, his stern face softening into a warm, paternal expression.

"They look wonderful, Elena," Arthur said softly.

"They are fighters, Arthur," I answered. "Just like my grandfather."

Arthur pulled up a chair across from me, taking a seat. "I have the preliminary asset recovery report from the forensic team. We have successfully secured eighty-five percent of the converted capital. The offshore accounts in the Caymans have been frozen by international court order, and Celeste Arden’s legal counsel has already reached out seeking a settlement offer."

"No settlements, Arthur," I stated clearly, looking up from my son. "She returns every dollar, every piece of jewelry, and every asset purchased with trust money. If she refuses, proceed with full criminal conversion charges."

"Understood," Arthur nodded. "And what about Daniel?"

Before I could answer, a commotion echoed from the security desk at the end of the hallway.

"You can't keep me out!" Daniel’s voice screamed, raspy, desperate, and unhinged. "I am their father! I have a legal right to see my children!"

Arthur stood up instantly, his jaw tightening. "I’ll have security remove him."

"No, Arthur," I said, set Leo gently into his crib beside his sisters. "Let him in."

"Elena, you don't have to deal with him," Dr. Patel warned softly.

"I need him to see what he abandoned, Doctor," I said calmly. "It’s time to close this chapter."

Moments later, two burly hospital security guards escorted Daniel into the room. He looked completely unspooled. His tie was missing, his shirt collar was unbuttoned, his jacket was stained, and dark shadows hung beneath his bloodshot eyes.

He stepped into the room, his eyes darting frantically from me to the three incubators.

"Elena..." Daniel rasped, taking a step forward, his voice cracking with artificial emotion. "Elena, thank God you're okay... I’ve been trying to get back to you all day..."

"You weren't trying to get back to us, Daniel," I said, my voice completely devoid of anger. "You were at Celeste’s house trying to salvage your stolen money."

Daniel froze, swallowing hard. He looked down at the floor, then forced a pathetic, trembling smile onto his face as he looked toward the cribs.

"Elena, please..." he wept, tears leaking from his eyes as he sank onto his knees beside my chair. "I made a mistake! A horrible, stupid mistake! Celeste manipulated me! She seduced me, she lied to me, she used me for my corporate standing! I never loved her, Elena! I only love you! You are my wife, the mother of my children!"

He reached out, trying to grab my hand.

I pulled my hand back, out of his reach, looking down at him as if he were a complete stranger.

"You didn't care about these children when I was lying on an operating table bleeding out at two o'clock in the morning, Daniel," I said softly. "You turned your phone face down so you could eat birthday cake with your mistress."

"I didn't know you were in danger!" he sobbed, clutching at the fabric of his trousers. "If I had known, I would have come running! You have to believe me!"

"A father doesn't need a medical emergency to care if his unborn children are alive, Daniel," I replied, pointing toward the clear cribs where our three infants lay sleeping. "Look at them."

Daniel slowly raised his head, looking at the tiny babies.

"They fought for their lives for eighteen hours while you were celebrating another woman," I said, my voice cutting through his pathetic sobbing like a surgical steel blade. "You don't get to claim the reward of their survival when you refused to share the burden of their pain."

Daniel buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with genuine, desperate terror—not because he felt remorse for what he had done to us, but because he finally realized there was no exit, no lie, no charm that could save him.

"What am I supposed to do?" Daniel whimpered from the floor. "I have nothing left, Elena... I don't have a job, I don't have an account, I don't even have a place to stay tonight..."

I reached over to the bedside table, picked up a thin blue folder, and dropped it onto the floor beside his knees.

Inside were divorce papers, prepared by Arthur Vance, detailing a complete surrender of parental rights, an absolute waiver of spousal support, and a total exit from the Sterling estate.

"Sign the papers, Daniel," I said softly. "And never step into my sight again."
