Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

The following morning dawned bright, clear, and deceptively peaceful over South Beach.

By 8:00 AM, Arthur Sterling walked into my penthouse carrying a leather briefcase that looked heavy enough to sink a boat.

He looked around at the pristine, empty apartment, noticing the lack of Marcus’s expensive art pieces and designer furniture.

"Clean," Arthur remarked, setting the briefcase on the kitchen island. "I like it."

"How bad is the corporate filing?" I asked, handing him a mug of black coffee.

"It’s not bad at all, Eleanor," Arthur smiled, pulling out a stack of court-stamped documents. "It’s a goldmine. Harold Bennett made the critical mistake of trusting your husband's word. Marcus told Bennett that you had already agreed to the IP transfer as part of a post-nuptial tax settlement."

"So Bennett filed false documentation based on Marcus's forgery?"

"Precisely," Arthur chuckled. "Apex Global Ventures put up three million dollars in bridge financing to secure the transfer rights. Money that Marcus promptly placed into an escrow account held by... guess who?"

"Barbara Vance?" I guessed.

"Bingo," Arthur said, slapping his hand on the marble counter. "Marcus transferred the three million directly into his mother’s personal revocable trust yesterday morning at 9:00 AM—right before they met you at the marina!"

I felt a dark laugh bubble up in my chest.

They were so arrogant. So supremely convinced of their own intellectual superiority that they had executed a three-million-dollar wire fraud scheme while standing on a public dock sipping champagne.

"Where are they now?" I asked.

"They spent the night at the Grand Beach Hotel," Arthur reported, pulling out his phone. "Well, Marcus, his parents, and Chloe did. Marcus tried to put four luxury suites on his corporate card, but since the account was frozen, the hotel held their luggage at the desk until Richard produced a personal check."

"Which will bounce by noon," I added smoothly.

"Which will bounce by noon," Arthur agreed with a wink. "They are currently frantic. Marcus’s high-priced corporate defense attorney, a pompous windbag named Donald Vance—his second cousin—just called my office. They are demanding an immediate, off-the-record emergency settlement conference at 2:00 PM today."

"Where?"

"In Donald's conference room downtown," Arthur said. "They think they hold the upper hand because of the Delaware patent filing. They think you're going to come into that room terrified of a public scandal that could hurt Aegis's stock valuation."

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the city skyline.

"Tell them we accept," I said.

Arthur blinked. "Really? You want to meet them in their office?"

"I want them in a enclosed space with glass walls, Arthur," I said, turning to face him. "I want Marcus, Barbara, Richard, Chloe, and Harold Bennett sitting across a mahogany table believing they are about to force me into a surrender."

"And who are you bringing?" Arthur asked, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face.

"I’m bringing you," I said. "Along with Special Agent Miller from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division, and Assistant District Attorney Ramos from the State Attorney's Office."

Arthur actually let out a loud boom of laughter that echoed off the high ceilings. "Eleanor, your father would be singing from the heavens right now. Do they know the federal authorities are involved?"

"Not yet," I replied smoothly, picking up my phone and sending a single text message to Sarah Chen. "Right now, they think they're meeting a soft, heartbroken wife who just wants her marriage back."

My phone chimed three seconds later with a reply from Marcus.

TEXT FROM MARCUS: "Be at Donald's office at 2:00 PM sharp, Eleanor. Bring your corporate seals. If you sign the release, I might consider dropping the emotionally abusive spouse lawsuit I'm filing tomorrow. Don't be late."

May you like

I picked up my pen, twirling it between my fingers.

"Oh, Marcus," I murmured to the empty room. "I won't be late. I wouldn't miss your execution for the world."
