Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The news of Margaret and Paige’s arrest shook the Pacific Northwest business community to its core.
For three days, cable news channels ran wall-to-wall coverage of the "Cole Urban Development Scandal," highlighting the dramatic fall of Margaret Cole and the miraculous recovery of the founder she had tried to erase.
With Margaret and Paige locked in federal custody pending bail hearings, I took immediate control of the company. My first act as restored CEO was appointing Marcus as Chief Operating Officer and naming Elena as Vice President of Community Relations and Philanthropy.
Together, we held a massive press conference in the lobby of Tower One.
"Cole Urban Development was founded on a simple principle," I spoke into the bank of microphones, surrounded by dozens of reporters. "That building a city isn't just about pouring concrete and erecting steel—it's about honoring the people who live inside it. For the last seven months, that vision was corrupted by greed. Today, my wife and I are pledging ten million dollars from our personal equity to establish the Cole Family Foundation, which will fund low-income maternity care, legal aid for displaced families, and pediatric healthcare across Washington State."
The reporters broke into spontaneous applause.
Beside me, Elena smiled brightly, her hand tucked tightly into mine.
That afternoon, we received the news we had been praying for since the babies were born.
The head NICU physician at St. Jude’s called us personally. "Mr. and Mrs. Cole, all three babies have hit their target weight goals, their breathing is completely independent, and they are ready to go home."
When we arrived at the hospital, Rosa was already there waiting with three warm car seats, newborn clothing, and small handmade soft blankets she had knitted herself over the weekend.
I helped Elena carefully buckle Leo, Alexander, and Sophia into their seats. They looked tiny inside the plush fabric, but their cheeks were rosy, their breathing steady and peaceful.
"Ready to go home, daddy?" Elena asked softly, resting her hand on my arm.

"Ready," I smiled, kissing her forehead.
As we walked out of the hospital into the bright summer sunshine, three private security guards—hired by Marcus to ensure absolute privacy—escorted us to a spacious, luxury SUV. There were no cameras, no corporate attorneys, and no fake smiles. Just my wife, my children, and a future we were going to build with our own hands.
