Chapter 8 - The Verdict of the Glass Ballroom

The master of ceremonies stepped to the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, members of the board, and distinguished guests. Please welcome the acting Chairman of the Drummond Group, Mr. Richard Vance."
The room erupted into polite applause. Richard stepped onto the stage, adjusting his microphone. He flashed a practiced, sorrowful smile.
"Thank you, everyone," Richard began, his voice echoing through the massive ballroom. "As many of you know, my dear cousin, Edward Drummond, has recently suffered a profound personal crisis. The pressures of his immense responsibilities, coupled with sudden... medical instabilities, have forced him to take an indefinite leave of absence. In his absence, I have promised to guide the Drummond Group with the same integrity and strength—"
"You wouldn't know integrity if it bought you a drink, Richard."
My voice, amplified by the ballroom's secondary microphone system which Marcus had hijacked, cut through the room like a blade.
The applause died instantly. A collective gasp rippled through the crowd of five hundred people.
Richard froze on stage, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the podium.
The double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.
I walked in.
I was not wearing a tuxedo. I was wearing a simple charcoal suit, my hands in my pockets, my expression entirely calm. But I was not alone.
Walking beside me was Sophia. Her chin was held high, her gaze steady. Behind us came Marcus Vance, flanked by four federal agents in trench coats, and Isabella, who looked terrified but resolute.
The crowd parted like the Red Sea. Whispers broke out like wildfire.
"Edward!" Richard stammered, recovering his composure quickly. "This... this is highly irregular. Security, please escort Mr. Drummond out. He is clearly not well—"
"The only person leaving tonight, Richard, is you," I said, reaching the foot of the stage.
Marcus stepped forward, raising his badge and a set of federal warrants. "Richard Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit medical fraud, identity theft, bribery of medical officials, and the suspected wrongful deaths of Maria Clark and Clara Higgins."
The ballroom went completely silent. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning.
"This is absurd!" Richard screamed, his face turning an ugly shade of purple. "This is a family dispute! Edward is sterile! He has no heirs! He is trying to parade a street child as his daughter to keep control of the board!"
I stepped onto the stage, pulling a wireless microphone from my pocket.
"Twelve years ago," I said, my voice carrying to every corner of the room, "Richard Vance paid off three separate medical laboratories to falsify my fertility reports. He wanted me to believe I could never have a family, so that my estate would fall to him."
The video screens behind the stage suddenly flickered to life.
Instead of the Drummond logo, they displayed Isabella's signed affidavit, followed by bank transactions showing millions of dollars moving from Richard's private accounts to the offshore clinic in Switzerland. Next came the official DNA results from the federal forensics lab, showing a perfect genetic match between myself, Sophia, and Arthur.
The board members in the front row stood up in shock.
"He lied to me," I said, pointing at Richard. "He lied to you. He used my family, my blood, to build his own throne. And he murdered the women who tried to protect my children."
"You have no proof of that!" Richard shrieked, backing away toward the rear of the stage. "You have nothing!"
"I have Isabella," I said.
Isabella stepped forward, her voice shaking but clear. "I performed the extractions, Richard. I kept the records. I have the original genetic samples with your signature on the authorization forms. I gave them to the federal agents two hours ago."
Richard looked at the screens, then at Isabella, then at the federal agents advancing up the stage stairs.

His eyes darted to Sophia.
In a moment of pure, desperate madness, Richard lunged off the stage, reaching for Sophia. "If I don't get the empire, you don't get her!"
