Chapter 4 - The War Begins

By Monday morning, news of the ruined engagement at the Plaza Hotel had reached every major tabloid in New York.

WHITAKER HEIR JILTS CARTRIGHT HEIRESS AT THE ALTAR!SECRET FAMILY DRAMA SHATTERS WALL STREET MERGER!

I walked into the corner office of Whitaker Enterprises at 8:00 a.m., wearing a dark blue suit, my face set like granite.

My assistant, Clara, looked up from her desk, her face pale. "Mr. Whitaker... your father has been in your office for an hour. He called an emergency board meeting for 10:00 a.m."

"Thank you, Clara," I said calmly. "Call our head of legal counsel, David Sterling. Tell him to be in my office in five minutes."

I pushed open the heavy oak doors of my office.

Arthur Whitaker sat in my leather chair behind my mahogany desk, smoking a cigar, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan. Beside him stood two armed private security guards from the corporate detail.

"You've ruined us, Julian," Arthur said without turning around. His voice was cold, devoid of any paternal warmth. "The Cartwright family pulled out of the merger thirty minutes ago. Our stock price dropped twelve percent at the market opening. All because of a low-class waitress and her bastard children."

BANG!

I slammed my fist onto the mahogany desk with enough force to rattle the crystal pen holder.

"Speak about my sons like that again," I said, my voice dropping into a register of pure, unadulterated venom, "and I will throw you out of that window myself."

Arthur turned his chair around, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Sons? You don't know those children are yours. She was a gold-digger six years ago, and she's a gold-digger now. She saw you on the news, realized how wealthy you'd become, and pulled a cheap paternity scam."

"I took a DNA sample from all four boys on Saturday morning, Dad," I replied, pulling a sealed white envelope from my coat pocket and throwing it onto the desk. "The expedited laboratory results came back two hours ago. 99.9% biological probability. They are my sons. Your grandsons."

Arthur didn't even look at the envelope. He simply leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk.

"It doesn't matter," Arthur sneered. "At 10:00 a.m., the board of directors will vote to remove you as Chief Executive Officer due to reckless personal behavior and breach of fiduciary duty. You're out, Julian. I built this company, and I will not let you destroy it for a domestic fantasy."

The office door opened, and David Sterling—the company's chief legal counsel and my closest personal ally—stepped inside, holding a thick leather briefcase.

"Am I interrupting, Arthur?" David asked smoothly.

"You're late, David," Arthur barked. "Prepare the board documents for Julian’s executive termination."

David set his briefcase on the coffee table, unlatching the brass locks with a sharp click.

"Actually, Arthur," David said, pulling out a stack of legal documents stamped with the seal of the New York Supreme Court, "I'm here to serve you with a formal injunction and a criminal discovery petition."

Arthur froze. "What?"

"Over the past forty-eight hours," David continued calmly, "Julian and I have uncovered financial records from 2020. Specifically, a secret off-shore account registered in the Cayman Islands under your personal holding company, used to pay off medical trial boards, falsify police reports, and engage in corporate extortion against the Vance family."

Arthur’s face drained of color. His cigar slipped from his fingers, dropping onto the polished mahogany desk.

"You blackmailed a pregnant woman, Arthur," I said, stepping closer to him, leaning down until my eyes were level with his. "You used corporate funds to commit felony extortion. If this goes to trial, you won't just be removed from the board—you'll spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."

Arthur stared at me, his lip trembling, realizing for the first time in his life that the son he had manipulated for thirty years had finally broken free of his leash.

"What do you want?" Arthur rasped, his voice sounding old, hollow, and defeated.

"I want your immediate resignation as Chairman of the Board," I commanded softly. "I want you to transfer forty percent of your voting shares into an irrevocable trust for Milo, Mason, Max, and Micah. And most importantly..."

May you like

I paused, looking at the man who had stolen six years of my life.

"...I want you and Mother to stay the hell away from my wife and my sons forever."
