Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Lake

Summer arrived in New York, bringing warm breezes, golden sunshine, and clear blue skies.

I had purchased a vast, historic lakefront estate in upstate New York—a sprawling haven of green lawns, ancient oak trees, and private docks where the boys could run free, swim, and build the childhood they had been denied for six years.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the estate was filled with laughter and music.

David Sterling, Clara, and a few of our closest, true friends had gathered on the sprawling lawn overlooking the lake. Flowers lined a simple wooden altar set beneath a magnificent weeping willow tree.

In the master suite upstairs, I stood in front of the mirror, adjusting my tie.

Suddenly, four small figures stepped into the room, wearing matching navy-blue suits, crisp white shirts, and tiny silk bowties.

"Dad!" Milo called out, marching over proudly. "Are we ready?"

I turned around, my heart bursting with pride as I looked at my four sons. They looked handsome, healthy, and sharp—four little men who carried the best parts of me and the incredible strength of their mother.

I knelt on the floor in front of them, adjusting Mason’s bowtie, smoothing Max’s lapels, and combing Micah’s dark hair back.

"You boys look incredible," I said, my voice thick with emotion.

"Dad," Max asked, leaning in close, whispering conspiratorially. "Are you nervous?"

I laughed softly, shaking my head. "Not even a little bit, Max. I've been waiting eight years for this day."

"Mom looks like a princess," Micah beamed. "We saw her dress down the hallway! It has tiny shiny crystals on it!"

"She is a princess, Micah," I whispered, standing up and opening my arms. "Come here."

All four boys rushed into my embrace, hugging me tightly around the waist, their small laughter filling the room with pure magic.

A knock sounded at the door. David Sterling stepped in, smiling warmly. "It's time, Julian."

I took a deep breath, took Milo and Mason by the hands, while Max and Micah walked right beside us, leading my sons down the grand staircase to the lawn outside.
