Chapter 5 - The Corporate Ambush

By eight o'clock the following morning, news of William Whitmore's will had sent shockwaves through Atlanta's corporate financial district.

The board of directors of Whitmore Holdings was convened in an emergency session on the twentieth floor of the Whitmore Tower downtown.

Twelve senior executives—men and women who had grown comfortable under Grant’s somewhat complacent leadership over the past decade—sat around the massive glass boardroom table. Standing at the head of the table was Richard Vance, Vanessa’s uncle and the chief financial officer of the firm.

"This is an absolute farce!" Richard declared, slamming his leather binder onto the table. "Major Cole has been absent from this family and this corporation for ten years! She is a military officer, not a corporate executive! Placing fifty-one percent of our voting shares in the hands of an outsider will ruin our credit rating!"

The boardroom doors swung open.

I walked into the room wearing a tailored charcoal business suit, my silver military service pin pinned neatly to my lapel. Walking beside me was Arthur Sterling, carrying two thick leather briefcases, followed by three senior corporate attorneys from Atlanta’s top law firm.

Behind us walked Grant.

He didn't look like the confident CEO he had been two days ago. He looked pale, but his posture was resolute as he stepped into the room and took a seat at the far end of the table—not at the head.

I walked straight to the head of the table, pulled out the high-backed leather chair, and sat down smoothly.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice carrying total, absolute command. "I am Major Savannah Cole, Chairwoman of the Board."

Richard Vance’s face turned bright red. "Savannah, you can't just walk in here and take over! We are preparing an immediate legal injunction to challenge William's competency when he drafted that will!"

"You're welcome to try, Mr. Vance," Arthur Sterling interjected smoothly, laying a stack of legal documents on the center of the table. "However, as the former executor and personal counsel to William Whitmore, I assure you that every psychiatric evaluation conducted prior to his signature was certified by the state supreme court. The trust is ironclad."

Richard gritted his teeth, turning his glare to Grant. "Grant! Are you just going to sit there and let her strip your authority away?! Speak up!"

Grant looked up, his eyes meeting Richard’s with a cold, piercing clarity.

"Savannah holds the controlling interest, Richard," Grant said clearly. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, I have officially resigned my position as Chief Executive Officer. I have recommended to the board that Savannah assume executive control immediately."

A stunned murmur ran through the room.

Richard stared at Grant in absolute disbelief. "Are you out of your mind?! You're handing the entire empire over to your ex-wife?!"

"I am handing it over to the mother of my children," Grant said, his voice unwavering. "And unlike you, Richard, she has the integrity required to lead this company."

I opened my folder and looked across the table at Richard Vance.

"Speaking of integrity, Mr. Vance," I said, sliding a document across the glass table toward him. "We’ve conducted an initial forensic audit of the corporate accounts over the last twelve hours. It appears that over the past three years, six million dollars in vendor consultation fees were routed to an offshore holding company registered under your niece's name... Vanessa Foster."

Richard’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. The color drained from his face as the rest of the board members turned to stare at him in shock.

"Effective immediately," I announced, standing up from my chair, "Richard Vance is relieved of his duties as CFO. Security is currently clearing his office. Have a nice day, gentlemen."
