Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Vanessa Foster

While our family began the slow, delicate process of healing, the law was rapidly catching up with Vanessa Foster and her uncle.
Three weeks after the reading of the will, federal agents executed a search warrant on Vanessa’s luxury high-rise apartment in downtown Atlanta. The forensic trail left behind by the six-million-dollar embezzlement scheme from Whitmore Holdings was insurmountable.
Furthermore, the private investigator Vanessa had hired ten years ago—Ronald Vance—had been brought in for questioning by local authorities. Facing charges of extortion and corporate espionage in an unrelated case, Vance quickly cut a plea bargain with prosecutors, turning over his original records from a decade prior.
I sat in the office of the District Attorney in downtown Atlanta, with Grant sitting beside me, as the lead prosecutor laid out the final evidence file.
"It's a textbook case of wire fraud, conspiracy, and evidence tampering," District Attorney Vance explained. "Ronald Vance handed over the original, unedited digital files from the hotel lobby. He admitted in a sworn deposition that Vanessa Foster paid him ten thousand dollars to alter the timestamp and crop out the other service members in Major Cole's unit."
Grant stared at the prosecutor, his jaw tight. "She spent ten years building a life on a malicious fraud."
"And it's over now," DA Vance said. "We issued an arrest warrant an hour ago. She and her uncle Richard are facing multiple federal counts. Given the financial scale of the embezzlement, she is looking at a mandatory minimum of twelve years in federal prison."
As we walked out of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sunlight, Grant stopped near the top of the marble steps.
He looked at me, his eyes filled with a deep, quiet respect.
"Savannah," Grant said softly. "I know saying 'I'm sorry' will never make up for the ten years I lost with you and the kids. But I want to thank you."
"For what, Grant?"
May you like
"For not letting me stay a blind fool," he said. "For having the strength to bring the truth into the light."
"I didn't do it for revenge, Grant," I said, looking out over the city skyline. "I did it because my children deserve to walk through life knowing exactly who they are, where they came from, and that their mother’s honor was never compromised."
