Chapter 10 - The Horizon

One year after the IED blast in Iraq, I stood on the deck of the USNS Comfort docked at the Norfolk Naval Station.

The morning sky was clear and bright blue, the sun reflecting off the water like millions of scattered diamonds. As Chief Logistics Coordinator, I was overseeing the final loading phase of a major humanitarian aid mission bound for the Caribbean. Hundreds of tons of medical supplies, clean water systems, and emergency rations were being moved efficiently onto the massive white vessel.

Captain Thomas Miller walked up beside me, holding a tablet. "All containers are secured, Major. We are fully loaded three hours ahead of schedule."

"Excellent work, Miller," I said, looking out over the busy pier. "Signal the captain that logistics clearance is granted."

"Yes, ma'am!" Miller saluted and turned back toward the command gangway.

I walked to the edge of the railing, resting my hands against the cool steel.

My right leg felt strong. It would never be completely pain-free, and I would always carry the faint scar running from my knee to my ankle, but it carried me wherever I needed to go. It had carried me through the burning sands of Iraq, through the agonizing corridors of Walter Reed, through the painful courtroom battles, and finally, onto the deck of this ship.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object.

It was the single one-dollar coin I had kept as a reminder—the dollar I had sent to Carolyn that started the unraveling of the lies.

I held it between my thumb and forefinger for a moment, looking at its shiny surface. Then, with a smooth, effortless motion, I flipped it high into the air. The coin spun in the bright sunlight before dropping into the deep blue water below, disappearing beneath the surface without a sound.

My past was paid in full. My future was entirely my own.

I turned around, adjusted my cover, and walked back toward the command post with a clear mind, a strong heart, and a firm, steady stride.
