Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Foundation

A month after the divorce was finalized, I moved back into my home in Arlington.
The house had been cleared of Mason’s belongings weeks earlier. I hired a local contractor—a female veteran-owned business—to completely renovate the interior. We repainted the walls from Carolyn's preferred muted beige to warm, vibrant tones of sage and cream. We tore out the old carpets and replaced them with light oak hardwood floors.
In the living room, above the fireplace, I mounted the custom oak display case Master Sergeant Vance had built for me. The Bronze Star, Combat Action Badge, and Purple Heart caught the warm light of the afternoon sun, no longer hidden away in a cardboard box, but displayed with pride.
That evening, I hosted a small dinner party to celebrate my promotion and my full return to independent living.
Denise, my physical therapist, was the first to arrive, bringing a bottle of wine. "Look at you," she smiled, watching me move smoothly through the kitchen without any support. "I remember when you couldn't stand up for five seconds without screaming."
"I had a tough PT driving me," I laughed, pouring two glasses.
Captain Lin and Master Sergeant Vance arrived shortly after, followed by Kendall, who had driven up from Richmond for the weekend. Kendall looked healthier, happier, and had recently been promoted at her design firm.
We sat around the dining table, sharing stories, laughing, and enjoying a meal I had prepared myself. For the first time in years, the house felt full of real warmth, untainted by resentment, hidden debts, or cruel judgment.
At one point during the evening, Kendall stood up and raised her glass. "I want to make a toast," she said, looking around the room before her eyes settled on me. "To Nora. A real hero, a brilliant officer, and the strongest woman I know. Thank you for showing me what courage actually looks like."
"To Major Hayes!" Vance added, raising his glass high.
May you like
"To Major Hayes!" everyone echoed.
I felt a deep, overwhelming sense of gratitude wash over me as I raised my glass with them.
