Chapter 4 - THE AUDIT

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over the glass towers of downtown.

While the city woke up to routine Monday morning traffic, the executive floors of Sterling Enterprises were in total, unadulterated chaos.

I sat in the master corner office on the 40th floor—the office that had belonged to Brendan’s father before he was ousted, and which Brendan had been slated to take over next month. The room featured panoramic floor-to-ceiling views of the river, plush Italian leather armchairs, and a massive mahogany desk that had been cleared of all Brendan’s personal photos.

I was wearing a tailored navy silk maternity dress, my hair styled impeccably, a warm cup of herbal tea resting near my hand. Beside me sat Arthur Vance and a team of eight forensic accountants led by a sharp, middle-aged woman named Eleanor Vance, my father's cousin and head of corporate compliance.

A quiet knock echoed at the double glass doors.

"Enter," I said calmly.

The door pushed open, and Brendan walked in.

He looked as if he hadn't slept a single second in the last twelve hours. His suit was wrinkled, his hair was unwashed, and he was carrying a single plastic folder under his arm. He was accompanied by two private security guards who stood flanking him like prison wardens.

He stopped three feet from the desk, his eyes wide as he saw me sitting in the executive throne he had dreamed of occupying his entire career.

"Cassidy..." he whispered, his voice hoarse and raspy. "Please. They locked my security badge at the front entrance. The guards brought me up here like a criminal. My mother spent the night in a hotel room near the airport because her credit cards were declined."

"Sit down, Brendan," I said, gesturing to the small chair across from me.

He sat down quickly, his hands trembling as he laid his folder on the desk. "Look, I brought the financial statements for my department. I swear everything is in order. You don't have to do this to us. We can fix this! We can go to marriage counseling! What about our daughter? She needs her father!"

Eleanor Vance scoffed loudly from the side table, opening a thick ledger. "Don't weaponize the child you neglected, Mr. Sterling. Let's talk about your 'orderly' financial statements."

Eleanor tossed a twenty-page printout onto the mahogany surface in front of Brendan.

"Over the last twenty-four months," Eleanor read smoothly, "you authorized forty-seven separate 'executive discretionary transfers' from the regional development fund to a private holding company registered under the name Gold Horizon LLC."

Brendan’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "That... that was an offshore marketing consultant!"

"Gold Horizon LLC is a shell corporation registered to Jessica Miller," Eleanor corrected coldly, looking over her glasses at him. "Your new girlfriend. You transferred $1.8 million of Vance Trust capital to pay for her luxury boutique in Soho, her condo lease, and two sports cars."

Brendan turned to me, his face going pale as death. "Cassidy! Listen to me! She manipulated me! She told me it was a legitimate business investment! I was going to pay it back!"

"You paid for your mistress using the money I earned while I was sleeping six hours a night doing freelance design work so you wouldn't feel 'threatened' by my financial independence," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

"I didn't know!" Brendan sobbed, covering his face with his hands. "I was stupid! Please, Cassidy, don't file criminal fraud charges! If I go to prison, my life is over!"

"Your life as a wealthy socialite was over the moment your mother dumped that bucket of water on my head, Brendan," I said quietly. "You didn't just stand there; you laughed. You let your mistress mock me. You treated me like dirt because you thought I had no power to fight back."

Arthur Vance stepped forward, pulling a legal document from his folder.

"Here are the terms of the settlement, Mr. Sterling," Arthur said. "Option One: You sign an immediate, full surrender of all personal equity in Sterling Enterprises, execute a quitclaim deed on all secondary properties, sign an uncontested divorce agreement granting Miss Vance sole legal and physical custody of your unborn child, and surrender your passport pending restitution."

Brendan swallowed hard. "And... and Option Two?"

Arthur smiled—a cold, terrifying expression. "Option Two is that I hand this forensic audit to the United States Attorney for the Southern District at 10:00 AM. You will be indicted for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and corporate tax evasion by noon. You will face a minimum of twelve years in federal prison, and your mother will be named as an unindicted co-conspirator for receiving stolen corporate funds."

Brendan stared at the paper. Tears streamed down his cheeks, dripping onto the pristine white pages of the agreement.

He had no leverage. No money. No influence. His family's name, built on a mountain of borrowed pride and stolen wealth, was completely shattered.

"Where... where do I sign?" Brendan choked out, his voice barely a whisper.

Arthur handed him a pen.
