Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF JESSICA MILLER

Two months after the collapse of the Sterling family, the fallout continued to ripple through the elite social circles of New York.
While Brendan struggled to adapt to a life of fifty-hour workweeks and a cramped apartment that smelled of stale radiator heat, his former mistress, Jessica Miller, found herself facing a far more immediate and terrifying catastrophe.
Jessica had believed that by aligning herself with Brendan, she was securing her ticket into old-money society. She had used the $1.8 million in embezzled Vance Trust funds to open Lumière, a high-end luxury fashion boutique on Madison Avenue, lining the walls with imported marble, brass fixtures, and hundred-thousand-dollar inventory lines.
On a rainy Tuesday morning, Jessica arrived at Lumière wearing a trench coat and sunglasses, hoping to avoid the local paparazzi who had been hounding her since the scandal broke.
When she reached the glass double doors of her store, she stopped dead in her tracks.
Two heavy yellow steel padlocks were chained across the brass door handles. Glued to the center of the glass was a bright red legal notice bearing the official seal of the United States Bankruptcy Court and the Vance Heritage Fund.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Jessica shrieked, banging her manicured fist against the reinforced glass.
A sleek black town car pulled up to the curb behind her.
The rear window rolled down smoothly, revealing Arthur Vance sitting in the back seat, holding a steaming cup of dark roast coffee and a thick sheaf of legal papers.
"Good morning, Miss Miller," Arthur said calmly over the sound of the falling rain.
Jessica marched over to the car, her umbrella shaking in her hand. "Did you do this?! You have no right! This store is registered under my name! It’s a private business!"
"It was registered under your name, Miss Miller," Arthur corrected in a measured tone. "However, pursuant to Title 11 of the Federal Bankruptcy Code, all assets acquired using funds derived from fraudulent corporate transfers are subject to immediate civil forfeiture."
He tapped a page inside his folder.
"The $1.8 million Mr. Sterling funneled to your account was stolen from the Vance Heritage Fund. As of 6:00 AM today, the federal court granted our petition for an emergency seizure. The inventory inside that store, the lease on your Soho apartment, and the Porsche sitting in your garage have all been seized to satisfy the restitution order."
Jessica’s face drained of color. "My... my apartment? My car?! You can't leave me with nothing!"
"You were a conscious participant in a scheme to defraud a multi-billion-dollar trust, Miss Miller," Arthur replied, his eyes cold as marble. "You enjoyed the champagne, the luxury dinners, and the cruel jokes at my client’s expense while living on her stolen wealth. Did you truly believe there would be no invoice?"
"Brendan gave me that money!" she screamed, tears smudging her dark eyeliner. "Sue him!"

"We already have," Arthur noted dryly. "Mr. Sterling is currently paying thirty percent of his meager salary toward court-ordered restitution. And as for you... the Southern District Attorney’s office has formally named you as a primary target in the wire fraud indictment."
Arthur rolled up the window without another word. The black town car pulled away smoothly from the curb, leaving Jessica standing alone in the pouring rain outside her locked store, her luxury life evaporating into the cold morning mist.
