Chapter 2 - The Warmth of the Armor

The interior of the armored SUV was a sanctuary of black leather, tinted glass, and absolute silence. The moment the heavy door clicked shut, the chaotic, frantic energy of the Royal Palms Plaza was completely cut off.

Blake immediately reached for a pristine white towel from the built-in mini-fridge console, wrapping it gently around my wet hair. He didn't say a word about the ruined dress or the broken heels. Instead, he poured two fingers of a rare scotch into a crystal tumbler and handed it to me.

"Drink," he commanded softly. "It’ll stop the shivering."

I took a long sip, the amber liquid burning beautifully down my throat, untying the cold knot that had formed in my chest. I looked at Blake, this man who was feared by every real estate mogul and politician in the state, yet looked at me as if I were the most precious artifact in his collection.

Our marriage had been a secret, but it wasn't a fake one. We had met a year ago when his company hired me to archive the historical documents of a massive colonial estate he had purchased. What started as a professional consultation quickly turned into late-night conversations over old leather books, shared dinners in secluded restaurants, and an intellectual and emotional connection that neither of us had expected. When he proposed to me in Paris, I had asked him to keep it quiet for a few months. I knew my family’s greed; the moment they found out I was with Blake Campbell, they would have turned my life into a commercial transaction.

I just hadn't expected them to sink to the level of public assault to prove their contempt for me.

"You knew what they were going to do, didn't you?" I asked quietly, looking out the tinted window as the Miami skyline blurred past.

Blake leaned back against the leather seat, his jaw set in a hard line. "My security team was tracking your father's financial movements, Vivienne. I knew he was desperate. What I didn't expect was for him to project his financial failure onto you in such a disgusting, public manner."

"What financial failure?" I frowned, looking at him. "My father has always claimed the Vance Group was solid. Penelope's wedding cost over half a million dollars."

"It was a facade," Blake said, sliding a tablet across the console toward me. On the screen was a confidential audit report of the Vance Group. "Your father heavily leveraged the family’s commercial properties to fund Julian’s waterfront project. He thought that by marrying Penelope to Julian, he could merge their assets and secure a major credit line from my bank. But Julian’s company is a hollow shell. They've been embezzling funds for months."

I stared at the numbers, the realization washing over me. "So the show without a date... the public humiliation... it was a distraction. He wanted to blame me for being the 'failure' of the family so the shareholders wouldn't look too closely at his own books."

"Exactly," Blake said, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light. "He wanted to break you so you wouldn't ask for your share of your grandmother’s trust fund, which he secretly liquidated six months ago to pay off his gambling debts in Nassau."

A hot, familiar anger flared up in my chest. My grandmother’s trust fund was the only thing I had left of the woman who actually loved me. It was meant to fund my historical preservation foundation.

"He stole from me," I whispered, the final remnants of familial loyalty disintegrating into ash. "He humiliated me, threw me into a fountain, and stole my inheritance."

"He did," Blake agreed, reaching out to take my hand, his thumb stroking my knuckles. "And now, we are going to take everything he has left. But we won't do it in the dark, Vivienne. We're going to do it in the full light of day, where every single person who applauded tonight can watch the collapse."

"What’s the first step?" I asked, my voice turning cold, matching the tone I had used at the fountain.

Blake smiled, a slow, lethal expression that had signaled the end of dozens of corporate empires. "Tomorrow morning, the Campbell Bank is calling in the short-term loans on the Vance Group's flagship building. Your father has twenty-four hours to produce eighty million dollars. And when he can't, the keys come to you."
