Chapter 5 - The Theater of Extortion

"What is the meaning of this, Richard?" Blake asked, his voice dead calm, though the muscles in his jaw were locked tight. Marcus and the security team instantly shifted their formation, completely surrounding Blake and me, their eyes fixed on the hidden cameras.
"It’s called leverage, Mr. Campbell," Arthur Sterling, the attorney, spoke up, stepping forward with a legal folder. He gestured to the recording equipment. "We’ve been broadcasting a private, encrypted live stream directly to a secure cloud server. The moment your security detail drew their weapons on this private property, it was logged as an act of armed corporate intimidation."
Penelope let out a sharp, venomous laugh from the stairs. "You thought you could destroy my wedding and take our family company over a little water under the bridge? Look at you, Vivienne. You brought an armed militia to your parents' home because of a fake phone call. How do you think the Campbell Enterprises shareholders will react when the media reports that Blake Campbell uses private mercenaries to terrorize elderly citizens in Coral Gables?"
My mother stepped down the stairs, her tears completely gone, replaced by a cold, transactional expression. "We gave you a chance to be reasonable, Vivienne. We asked you to help your family. But you chose to side with this monster who wants to bankrupt us."
I looked at my family, the sheer depth of their depravity finally completely exposed. They had staged a suicide threat, used my mother’s tears as bait, just to capture a video clip they could use to blackmail Blake into dropping his financial foreclosure.
"You really are pathetic, Father," I said, my voice devoid of fear, filled only with a profound, clean disgust. "You would fake your own death just to save a failing balance sheet."
"It’s not just about a balance sheet, my dear," Richard said, taking a sip of his scotch. "Mr. Sterling here has drafted a private settlement agreement. Blake will release the Vance Group from the eighty-million-dollar debt, retroactively legitimize the trust fund liquidation as a 'family loan,' and sign over a ten percent stake in the Brickell waterfront development to Julian’s firm. If you sign tonight, this video disappears, and we can all go back to being a happy, quiet family."
"And if we don't?" Blake asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper that should have warned them, but their greed had made them blind.
"If you don't," Julian sneered, stepping forward, holding a tablet. "The video goes live on every major news network in Miami in exactly five minutes. The headline will read: Billionaire Blake Campbell and His Vindictive Wife Launch Armed Assault on Family Home. Your stock will drop ten points before the opening bell tomorrow, Blake. Eighty million is a cheap price to pay for your reputation."
Blake looked down at his watch, completely unbothered by the countdown. Then, he looked at Marcus. "Marcus, is the signal suppression active?"
Marcus tapped his earpiece. "Yes, sir. The localized jammer in our lead vehicle has been active since we crossed the gates. Nothing has left this house. The secure cloud server they’re streaming to has been receiving nothing but dead static for the last seven minutes."
The smile on Julian’s face instantly froze. He began to frantically tap the screen of his tablet. "What? No... that’s impossible. It says connected... wait, the upload queue is blocked! The server is offline!"
Arthur Sterling frowned, his professional composure cracking. "What did you do?"
Blake stepped out from behind the security wall, his eyes locking onto my father with the finality of a judge delivering a death sentence. "Did you really think I would enter a hostile environment without controlling the network architecture, Richard? I own the telecommunications infrastructure in this zip code. Your little theater production didn't leave this room."
Before my father could speak, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the front porch. The front door was pushed open completely, and this time, it wasn't Blake's private security.

Six uniformed officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department, accompanied by an agent from the State Financial Crimes Bureau, stepped into the foyer.
"Richard Vance? Julian Miller?" the lead agent called out, pulling a set of federal arrest warrants from his coat. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit extortion, wire fraud, and the unlawful liquidation of protected trust funds. Hands behind your back. Now."
