Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Secrets

The rain poured heavily over the industrial sprawl of the South Side, washing over the cracked asphalt of the Old District.

We arrived in a battered, unmarked delivery van that Elena had stashed in a hidden garage three blocks from my main estate. Marcus sat bound and gagged in the back, his head resting against the cold metal wall, his eyes burning with silent hatred.

The Old District vault was an abandoned brewery that my father had converted into an underground fortress during the Prohibition era. The brick exterior was crumbling, covered in dead ivy and graffiti, but beneath three feet of reinforced concrete lay the true central nervous system of the Carter family legacy.

Elena unlocked the heavy iron door using a mechanical key that had never been digitized. She led the way down a narrow spiral staircase, her flashlight cutting through the thick damp fog hanging in the stairwell.

"This place hasn't been opened since the night Thomas died," I said, descending behind her as Marcus was dragged down by two loyal old-guard soldiers I had managed to contact en route.

At the bottom of the stairs lay a heavy steel vault door with a six-dial mechanical combination lock. I stepped up to the wheel, my fingers remembering the numbers by heart: 19-84-06-12—the birthdates of my brother and myself.

With a heavy hydraulic hiss, the vault door swung open, revealing a dusty, pristine room preserved in time.

In the center of the room sat a massive oak table covered in old paper ledgers, cassette tapes, and locked steel safety deposit boxes. Against the far wall hung a massive map of Chicago, pinned with old photographs and hand-drawn supply routes.

"Bring him here," I ordered.

The soldiers pushed Marcus into a heavy wooden chair, pulling the gag from his mouth.

"Do your worst, Vincent," Marcus spat, blood from his split lip staining his collar. "Your lieutenants are dying right now. The Morettis have taken the docks, the distribution centers, and your private bank accounts. By morning, you won't even be a memory in this city."

I walked over to the oak table, ignoring his taunts. I picked up a small metal box covered in dark green velvet, layer upon layer of dust coating its surface. From my inner pocket, I pulled out a brass key that I had worn around my neck for twenty years.

"You said you had a tape, Marcus," I said quietly, inserting the key into the box. "Who gave it to you?"

"Dominic Moretti," Marcus sneered. "He brought it to me three months ago. It was a wiretap recording from your office the night my father was killed. It was you telling your enforcers to pull the security detail from the warehouse!"

I popped the lock of the velvet box. Inside lay a single, original reel-to-reel audio tape, along with a thick stack of medical files and bank records bearing the official seal of the Italian consulate.

"Dominic Moretti gave you a spliced recording, Marcus," Elena said softly, stepping forward and placing a portable reel-to-reel player on the table. "He cut out the first three minutes of the conversation."

Elena carefully threaded the original tape through the rusty brass wheels of the player, hitting the heavy play toggle.

A static hiss filled the cold vault room, followed by the deep, unmistakable voice of my late brother, Thomas.

“Vincent... listen to me closely,” Thomas’s recorded voice echoed off the damp concrete walls, trembling with desperation. “Dominic Moretti found out about the offshore accounts. He’s holding my wife and Marcus hostage at the marina. If I don't walk into that warehouse alone tonight, they’ll kill them both.”

My own recorded voice responded on the tape, filled with frantic dread: “Thomas, no! Don't go alone. I’m sending my entire security team to the marina to cut your family out first!”

Thomas’s voice broke on the recording: “No, Vincent! Pull the security team from the warehouse! Make Moretti think I’m unprotected. If they see your men at the warehouse, they will pull the trigger on Marcus at the marina. Promise me, brother... protect my boy. Let me take the hit if I have to, but save my son.”

The recording clicked off into heavy, static silence.

Marcus sat frozen in the wooden chair, his face completely drained of color. His mouth hung open slightly, his breath catching in his throat as his father’s voice echoed in his ears.

"Your father traded his life for yours, Marcus," I whispered, stepping close to him and resting my hands on his shoulders. "I pulled the guards from the warehouse because Thomas ordered me to save you at the marina. I spent the last twenty years pretending to work with the Morettis so I could slowly dismantle their network from the inside without putting a target on your back."

Tears spilled from Marcus’s eyes, dripping onto his hands. "No... no, this... this can't be..."

"It is," Elena said, her voice stern and unyielding. "And while you were planning to murder the man who raised you, Dominic Moretti was using you to open the front gates of the Carter empire."
