Chapter 4 - The Gathering of Shadows

By 3:00 a.m., the vault room had become the command center for a war that had been forty-eight hours in the making.

Marcus sat in the corner, his head buried in his hands, completely shattered by the realization of his betrayal. The anger that had sustained him for years had evaporated, leaving behind only the hollow shell of a man who had almost murdered his father’s protector.

I stood over the large oak table, looking down at a layout of the city.

Beside me, Elena had removed her maid's apron, laying out three custom tactical rifles, dozens of high-capacity magazines, and encrypted radio units on the table. She operated with the lethal focus of an elite soldier, her movements fluid and efficient.

"We have lost control of the West Side shipping terminals," Leo reported, stepping into the room with his shoulder heavily bandaged from a gunshot wound he had taken during the front gate ambush. "Dominic Moretti’s men took the high-rise offices downtown an hour ago. They think you’re dead, Vincent. They’re calling a emergency meeting of the five commission families at the Grand Plaza Hotel at sunrise to announce the merger of our assets into theirs."

"Who signed off on the commission meeting?" I asked, eyeing the map.

"Your chief financial strategist, Paul Mercer," Leo spat. "He turned state’s evidence for Moretti three weeks ago. He’s the one who gave Marcus the security override codes for your estate."

"Paul Mercer..." I murmured. I had built that man from a low-level accountant into a multi-millionaire.

"If Moretti secures the commission’s endorsement at sunrise," Elena said, loading a magazine into an assault rifle with a crisp click, "he takes legal control of the logistics ports. The federal authorities won't intervene in a commission transition. You have three hours to strike before the empire is legally wiped off the board."

I walked over to Marcus. I reached down, took a iron key from my pocket, and unlocked the handcuffs binding his wrists.

Marcus looked up at me, his eyes red, raw, and filled with deep shame. "Why are you letting me go? I brought them to your bedroom, Uncle Vincent. I should be dead."

"You bear your father’s name, Marcus," I said, my voice cutting through the damp air like cold steel. "And despite your stupidity, you are still a Carter. You have two choices tonight: you can sit in this vault and rot with your guilt, or you can pick up a weapon and help me bury the men who murdered your father."

Marcus stared at the key in his lap, then looked up at the wall map. Slowly, his hands stopped trembling. A new kind of fire—not born of manipulated rage, but of pure, unadulterated vengeance—lit up his eyes.

He stood up from the chair, wiping the blood from his mouth.

"Give me a rifle," Marcus said softly. "I’m going to kill Dominic Moretti myself."
