Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Honor

Thirty minutes felt like thirty years inside the silent hearing room.
Evelyn Reed fidgeted nervously in her seat, her initial smug confidence beginning to shatter under the weight of Steel’s powerful testimony.
When the panel of generals returned to the bench, Lieutenant General Vance looked stern, holding an official leather folder.
"All rise," the bailiff announced.
Everyone in the courtroom stood up. Steel stood at military attention, his chin held high, his posture flawless.
General Vance looked down at Steel over his glasses. "Colonel Arthur Steel. This panel has thoroughly reviewed your thirty-year service record, the airport security footage, the testimony of Child Protective Services, and your statements today."
General Vance paused, letting the silence hang heavy in the air.
"This panel finds that your actions on October 12th were not a breach of military discipline," General Vance declared, his voice booming across the room. "They were an extraordinary display of moral courage, decisive leadership, and the highest ideals of the United States Armed Forces!"
Evelyn Reed let out a choked gasp of horror.
"Furthermore," General Vance continued, looking sternly at the Inspector General's team, "this panel formally dismisses all administrative complaints filed against Colonel Steel. The Department of Defense fully supports Colonel Steel’s application for full legal adoption of Lily and Owen Vance."
Cheering erupted from the gallery! Major Hayes clapped fiercely, while Marcus Vance let out a huge breath of relief.
General Vance struck his gavel down hard. "In addition, under the authority vested in me by the Secretary of the Army, Colonel Steel's resignation is officially rejected. You are a commander this country cannot afford to lose, Arthur."
Tears spilled over Lily’s cheeks as she broke away from Mrs. Higgins, sprinting down the center aisle of the courtroom with her tiny shoes clicking against the marble floor.
"Colonel! Colonel!" she cried out.
Steel broke his rigid military posture, dropping to his knees on the marble floor with open arms. Lily threw her tiny arms around his neck, burying her face into his uniform collar. Owen ran down the aisle right behind her, throwing his arms around Steel’s broad chest, holding on with all his strength.
Steel wrapped his massive arms around both twins, burying his face in their hair, his own eyes brimming with rare, warm tears.
In the back of the courtroom, two federal marshals stepped up behind Evelyn Reed.
"Evelyn Reed," a marshal announced loudly. "Following the evidence presented today regarding financial fraud and perjury, you are being taken into federal custody immediately."
Evelyn shrieked as steel handcuffs were snapped around her wrists once again, dragged out of the courtroom in complete disgrace as the media cameras flashed continuously.
Steel didn't even look at her. He pulled back slightly, looking into the bright, tear-stained faces of the twins.
"Did we win, Colonel?" Owen asked, clutching his teddy bear tightly.

Steel smiled—a warm, beautiful, genuine smile that lit up his entire face.
"We won, little soldier," Steel whispered softly. "We won."
