Chapter 6 - The Discovery

I moved into a charming, two-bedroom cottage rented for me by Sarah and funded by the community support fund. It was small, sunlit, and safe, located in a quiet neighborhood twenty miles away from the Bennett family estate.
For two weeks, life was a peaceful blur of late-night feedings, soft baby lullabies, and the sweet smell of newborn lotion. Noah was thriving, gaining weight rapidly, his bright blue eyes tracking my face whenever I sang to him.
But the storm brewing in the legal system was far from over.
On a rainy Tuesday morning, Victoria Vance arrived at my cottage carrying two massive black leather binders.
"It's time to go on the offensive, Rachel," Victoria said, setting the binders down on my dining table while I rocked Noah in my arms. "The formal custody trial is set for next month. But yesterday, my private investigator hit absolute gold."
I set Noah down gently in his bassinet and sat across from Victoria. "What did he find?"
Victoria pulled out a copy of the forged Power of Attorney document—the paper Margaret had presented to Dr. Carter in the operating room.
"We ran a forensic ink-and-handwriting analysis on your alleged signature at the bottom of this document," Victoria explained, pointing to the stylized script. "The expert concluded without a shadow of a doubt that it is a direct trace-forgery of your signature from your marital home mortgage application."
"I knew I never signed it!" I said, my blood running cold. "Who physically forged it?"
Victoria flipped to a high-resolution photograph of a notary stamp at the bottom of the page.
"The document was notarized three days before you went into labor by a woman named Chloe Sterling," Victoria revealed, her eyes sharp with triumph. "Chloe Sterling happens to be the senior executive assistant to Daniel Bennett at Bennett Logistics."
I sat frozen, staring at the photograph of the notary stamp. "Daniel's assistant?"
"We subpoenaed Chloe’s office email servers yesterday under a court order," Victoria continued, pulling out a stack of printed emails. "Read this."
I took the pages, my eyes scanning the printed text dated four days before I went into labor:
Daniel, Chloe has prepared the surgical consent forms and the medical power of attorney using Rachel's mortgage signature trace. Have Chloe notarize them today. If Rachel’s delivery becomes complicated or if the child shows signs of genetic failure, we will execute these documents immediately to prevent further damage to the estate. Do not discuss this with Rachel.
My hands shook so violently the paper rattled in my grip.
It was all right there in black and white.
It wasn't a sudden, panicked decision made in the heat of a terrifying medical emergency. It was a cold, calculated, premeditated conspiracy hatched by Margaret, executed by Daniel, and notarized by his employee days before I ever felt my first contraction.
They had planned to strip me of my bodily autonomy and steal my child before he was even born.
"This is criminal conspiracy, fraud, and notary misconduct," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "I sent this email packet to the District Attorney’s office two hours ago. The DA just authorized a formal criminal indictment against Margaret Bennett, Daniel Bennett, and Chloe Sterling."
Tears of rage and validation welled in my eyes. "They thought they could get away with it because they were rich."
"They thought you were weak, Rachel," Victoria said, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand tight. "They thought a gentle art teacher would crumble and surrender. They had no idea they were poking a mother lion."
Victoria opened the second binder, pulling out a crisp legal summons.
"Tomorrow morning is the preliminary court hearing for full custody and divorce," Victoria said, her eyes flashing with anticipation. "Margaret and Daniel think they are coming to court to argue about your income and your psychological state. They have no idea we hold the evidence that is going to put them in handcuffs."

I looked over at the bassinet where Noah lay sleeping, his little chest rising and falling softly under his yellow blanket.
"I want to see Daniel's face when he reads those emails," I said.
