Chapter 3 - The First Domino

By 8:00 AM on Monday morning, the Sterling family believed it was business as usual.
Richard Sterling Jr. arrived at the headquarters of Sterling Financial Development in downtown Pine Crest, wearing an Italian suit and carrying his designer leather briefcase, fully expecting his legal team to have swept the "Easter incident" under the rug.
He walked into the executive elevator, nodded to his receptionist, and stepped into his corner office overlooking the city.
Sitting behind his desk was a man he had never seen before.
The man was dressed in a pristine charcoal suit, calmly sipping espresso from a china cup while reviewing a thick stack of manila folders. Behind him stood two federal agents wearing dark suits and tactical badges.
"Who the hell are you?" Richard snapped, his face flushing with immediate rage. "Get out of my office before I call security!"
"Security won't be answering, Mr. Sterling," the man replied smoothly, setting down his cup. "I am Deputy Director Robert Vance from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. And these gentlemen are with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division."
Richard froze, his arrogant posture faltering for the briefest second. "Vance? Are you... are you related to Arthur Vance?"
"He's my brother," Robert said calmly, opening the top folder. "And while Arthur spent the last fifteen years building wooden furniture, I spent the last fifteen years tracking international wire fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering."
"This is ridiculous!" Richard blustered, reaching for his desk phone. "My father knows the governor! My family built this city!"
"Your family built a house of cards, Richard," Robert said, sliding a document across the desk. "At 6:00 AM today, a federal judge signed twenty-four search warrants covering every bank account, shell corporation, and property owned by Sterling Financial. As of ten minutes ago, all of your corporate assets, personal accounts, and trust funds have been frozen under the RICO Act."
Richard dropped into his chair, his face losing all color. "Frozen? You can't freeze my accounts! I have payroll today! I have loans!"
"You had loans," Robert corrected him. "Now you have federal indictments. And as for your wife..." Robert stood up, leaning over the desk until he was inches from Richard’s sweating face. "...my brother asked me to give you a message."

"What message?" Richard whispered, trembling.
"He said: This is just the first domino."
