Chapter 8 - The Final Judgement
Nine months after the incident, the final sentencing hearing took place at the Federal District Courthouse.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal observers, and citizens of Pine Crest who had come to witness the final chapter of the Sterling family's downfall.
Eleanor Sterling was sentenced first. Found guilty of multiple counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, and witness tampering, the former matriarch of Pine Crest was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. She broke down sobbing as the bailiffs led her away in handcuffs.
Then came Richard Sterling Jr.
He sat at the defense table, hollow-cheeked, frail, and utterly broken after months in federal holding. He looked like a shell of the confident, arrogant man who had stood on his porch laughing on Easter Sunday.
The judge looked down at Richard over his spectacles with absolute disgust.
"Mr. Sterling," the judge said, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "You were given every privilege life had to offer. Wealth, education, status. And yet, you used those gifts to intimidate, abuse, and torment your wife, believing your family's influence made you untouchable. The evidence presented in this court—the audio recording of your brutal attack, the medical documentation, and your lack of remorse—is appalling."
The judge slammed his gavel down.
"I sentence you to twenty-two years in state penitentiary for aggravated felony assault and strangulation, to be served consecutively with your fifteen-year federal sentence for financial racketeering. Court is adjourned."
As the verdict echoed through the room, Richard looked toward the gallery one last time.
