Chapter 9 - A Place to Call Home

The spring weeks turned into a beautiful, warm summer.

The Christa estate, once a cold and silent fortress of security guards and iron gates, was now filled with life, light, and laughter. Mrs. Gable baked fresh apple pies every weekend, and the manicured green lawns were perpetually littered with tennis balls, dog toys, and children's books.

One warm Saturday evening, Alfred sat on the outdoor terrace overlooking the rose gardens, sipping a cup of coffee.

Dr. Vance walked out onto the terrace holding a stack of completed legal adoption documents.

"Everything is finalized, Mr. Christa," Dr. Vance said, handing the papers to Alfred with a warm smile. "The court has approved the petition. Maya is officially Maya Vance-Christa."

Alfred looked down at the official seal on the parchment. His thumb gently traced her name.

Across the lawn, Maya was playing fetch with Bruno. The scruffy brown dog—now healthy, energetic, and sporting a glossy coat—chased a red ball across the grass, barking joyfully as Maya ran behind him, her bright laughter echoing through the warm summer air.

Marcus walked up the terrace steps, holding a pair of fresh lemonades. He handed one to Alfred, looking out at the playing child.

"Hard to believe this is the same girl from the alley," Marcus mused softly. "You changed her life, Boss."

Alfred shook his head gently, taking a sip of his coffee. "No, Marcus. She changed mine."
