Chapter 10 - Under the Sun

The morning of the wedding arrived with a sky so clear and blue it looked like an oil painting. The temperature was perfect, a gentle spring breeze carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and fresh roses across the estate grounds.
The ceremony was held outdoors, on the lush grassy lawn right beside the private lake—the exact spot where, two years earlier, a tiny four-year-old girl had sat drawing a lonely man in a dark vest.
White wooden chairs were arranged in neat rows on the lawn, filled with over two hundred guests. Staff members, former enforcers turned legitimate security guards, business partners, and local community leaders sat side-by-side, celebrating the miracle that had transformed the Moretti estate.
At the front of the altar, standing beside a frame covered in white and red roses, stood Adrienne. He was dressed in a sharp, dark blue tuxedo, looking handsome, regal, and deeply at peace. Standing beside him as his best man was Marcus, wearing a proud, wide smile.
The sound of string violins began to play a soft, romantic melody.
First came Mia, serving as the flower girl. She walked down the white aisle runner, wearing a delicate white dress with a crown of small yellow flowers in her hair. She held a basket of rose petals, scattering them with absolute joy, winking at "the quiet man" as she reached the altar.
Then, the music swelled.
Everyone stood up as Grace appeared at the end of the aisle.
She was breathtaking beyond words. Her wedding gown was a masterpiece of lace and silk, flowing around her like water, her long veil catching the gentle breeze. She carried a bouquet of bright red roses and yellow wildflowers—a tribute to the very first drawing Mia had ever made of Adrienne.
As Grace walked down the aisle, her eyes locked onto Adrienne’s. Tears of overwhelming happiness welled in her eyes. She remembered the nights she had spent weeping in cold, rented rooms, wondering if she and Mia would ever find a safe place in the world. She remembered the fear of coming to this estate, and the moment she realized that behind the formidable legend of Adrienne Moretti lay a soul capable of infinite love.
Adrienne watched her approach, his heart beating with fierce devotion. He reached out as she arrived at the altar, taking her hands in his.
"You look breathtaking, my love," Adrienne whispered softly, his voice trembling with emotion.
"I love you, Adrienne," Grace whispered back, her smile radiant.
The priest began the ceremony, his words echoing across the tranquil lake.
"We are gathered here today to unite Adrienne Moretti and Grace Miller in holy matrimony. A union born not of circumstance, but of profound love, redemption, and grace."
When the time came for the vows, Adrienne looked deep into Grace’s eyes, holding her hands tightly.
"Grace," Adrienne spoke, his deep voice carrying clear across the lawn. "For thirty-nine years, I lived in a world made of stone and iron. I believed that power meant standing alone, and that love was a vulnerability I couldn't afford. But you and Mia showed me that a life without love is not a life at all. You gave me a home, a purpose, and a family. I vow to protect you, cherish you, and love you with every beat of my heart, for all the days of my life."
Tears flowed freely among the guests. Even Marcus wiped away a quiet tear from his eye.
Grace squeezed Adrienne’s hands, her voice soft yet filled with unwavering strength.
"Adrienne, when I came to this house, I was afraid of the dark world outside. But in you, I found a protector, a partner, and the gentlest man I have ever known. You loved my daughter as your own, and you gave us a life beyond my wildest dreams. I promise to stand by your side, to love you unconditionally, and to fill your life with warmth and joy forever."
The priest smiled warmly. "By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Adrienne, you may kiss your bride."
Adrienne didn't hesitate. He pulled Grace into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet, and kissed her deeply under the bright spring sun.
The guests erupted into wild, joyous applause and cheers. Mia ran forward, throwing her arms around both of their legs, joining in the celebration.
Adrienne broke the kiss, laughing warmly, and scooped Mia up into his arm while holding Grace tightly against his side with the other.
As the guests moved toward the grand marquee for the wedding reception, Adrienne, Grace, and Mia walked down to the edge of the lake together.
The sun sat high in the sky, warm and bright, casting golden light across the calm water. Along the bank, hundreds of colorful flowers—red, pink, blue, orange—bloomed in full, vibrant life, leaning gently toward the water.
Mia reached into her tiny flower basket and pulled out a brand-new, small sketchbook and a pencil. She sat down on the low stone edge, just as she had done two years ago.
Adrienne and Grace sat down right beside her on the grass, holding hands, watching her draw.
Adrienne leaned over, looking at the page.
On the paper, Mia had drawn three figures standing by the water under a giant, glowing yellow sun, surrounded by endless colorful flowers. Above the picture, in her neat, five-year-old handwriting, she had written four simple words:
May you like
OUR HAPPY EVER AFTER.
Adrienne wrapped his arm around Grace, pulling his wife close, while resting his hand gently on Mia’s shoulder. He looked out at the tranquil lake, his heart full, complete, and forever at peace.
