Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Three weeks had passed since the council meeting, and the estate had settled into a newfound, serene rhythm. The oppressive atmosphere of fear that had dominated the mansion for decades was slowly dissolving, replaced by an air of cautious warmth.

Adrienne had made sweeping changes to the estate’s operations. Russo and several other guards known for their cruel demeanor were permanently replaced with disciplined, respectful men personally vetted by Marcus. The domestic staff, once terrified of making eye contact with the boss, were stunned to find Adrienne speaking to them politely, inquiring about their needs, and ensuring fair wages and hours.

Most shockingly of all, Grace and Mia were no longer confined to the small servant quarters in the rear. Adrienne had quietly had the guest suite in the main house—a bright, beautiful set of rooms with large bay windows overlooking the gardens—refurbished for them.

While Grace was hesitant at first, feeling out of place among the gilded mirrors and silk drapes, Mia embraced the change with pure childhood glee. Her drawings were no longer confined to worn scraps of paper; she now had entire art sketchbooks filled with vibrant scenes of the estate: the lake, the high stone walls covered in ivy, the cook in the kitchen baking cookies, and, most frequently, "the quiet man" sitting beside her in the gardens.

However, peace in the world of organized crime is often a fragile glass, easily shattered by the unexpected arrival of forgotten ghosts.

It was a bright Tuesday afternoon when Marcus knocked on the door of Adrienne’s study.

"Boss," Marcus said, his voice unusually strained. "There's someone at the outer gates demanding to see Grace Miller."

Adrienne looked up from his paperwork, his brows furrowing immediately. "Who is it?"

Marcus held out a printout of a security camera capture from the front gate. "A man named Richard Miller. We ran his plates—he's her ex-husband."

Adrienne’s eyes turned to cold flint. The coward who had walked out on Grace and a six-month-old Mia three and a half years ago, abandoning them to poverty and hardship, was standing at his gate.

"How did he find her?" Adrienne asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous low.

"He's been tracking her employment records," Marcus explained. "It seems he ran up massive gambling debts in the southern territories with local loan sharks. He heard through the grapevine that Grace was working at a high-end estate and assumes she has money—or that he can shake her down for alimony."

Adrienne stood up slowly, the blood pounding in his veins. The thought of this pathetic man showing up to harass Grace after leaving her to suffer made his blood boil.

"Bring Grace to my study," Adrienne ordered quietly. "Do not let that man past the outer security hut."

A few minutes later, Grace entered the study, looking confused and slightly anxious. "Adrienne? Marcus said you needed to see me?"

Adrienne walked around his desk, gently holding her hands. "Grace, I need you to stay calm. Richard is at the front gate."

Grace froze, the color completely draining from her face. Her hands went cold in Adrienne’s grip. "R-Richard? My husband?"

"Ex-husband," Adrienne corrected gently, his thumb rubbing the back of her wrist to steady her. "He's demanding to see you. Marcus informed me he's in deep financial trouble with southern loan sharks."

Grace shook her head, a mix of old trauma, fear, and deep disgust washing over her. "No... no, I don't want to see him. He abandoned us, Adrienne! He left us with nothing! Mia doesn't even know what he looks like!"

"You don't have to see him, Grace," Adrienne assured her, his eyes full of fierce protection. "You never have to speak to him again if you don't want to. I can have my men handle him immediately. He will never bother you again."

Grace looked into Adrienne’s eyes, seeing the absolute authority and lethal capability behind them. She knew that with a single word from Adrienne, Richard would vanish off the face of the earth.

However, Grace took a deep breath, her maternal strength taking over. She didn't want Adrienne committing a crime on her ex-husband's account, nor did she want her past to stain the new life they were building.

"No," Grace said firmly, setting her chin. "I want to speak to him once. I want him to know, face to face, that he has no power over us anymore. But... I want you with me."

Adrienne looked at her with deep admiration. "I will be right beside you."

Ten minutes later, in the small, sleek reception building near the estate's heavy iron gates, Richard Miller paced back and forth nervously. He was a scruffy, unkempt man in his mid-thirties, wearing a faded leather jacket, his eyes darting around at the heavy security guards standing silently in the corners.

The door opened, and Grace stepped into the room.

Richard’s face lit up with a mixture of relief and greasy charm. "Grace! Oh, thank God! Look at you, you look great—"

He took a step toward her, but froze mid-stride as Adrienne Moretti stepped into the room right behind her. Adrienne’s imposing six-foot-two frame, impeccably tailored black suit, and deadly aura filled the room, casting a literal shadow over Richard.

"Who... who are you?" Richard stammered, shrinking back slightly under Adrienne’s icy stare.

"I am Adrienne Moretti," Adrienne said, his voice deep, smooth, and terrified of nothing. "This is my home. You are speaking in my presence. Choose your next words very carefully."

Richard swallowed hard, recognizing the name instantly. Everyone on the eastern coast knew who Moretti was. He turned his eyes back to Grace, trying to regain his nerve.

"Grace, please," Richard whined, adjusting his jacket. "I know I made mistakes... leaving you and Mia back then. I was young, I panicked! But I've changed! I missed you guys. I heard you were working here—"

"Stop lying, Richard," Grace cut in, her voice surprisingly steady, completely devoid of the fear she used to feel toward him. "You didn't come here because you missed us. You came here because you owe money to people who are going to break your legs, and you thought you could squeeze money out of me."

Richard’s face flushed red with caught guilt. "Grace, I'm your husband! I have legal rights to see my daughter!"

"You abandoned your rights three and a half years ago when you packed a bag and left a baby without formula," Grace said, her hazel eyes burning with pure contempt. "You are not a father. You are a stranger. Mia doesn't know you, and she never will."

Richard gritted his teeth, desperation making him foolish. He took a sudden, aggressive step toward Grace, raising his voice. "You can't just write me off, Grace! I'll take you to court! I'll tell them you're living in a mafia house—"

Before Richard could finish his sentence or get within three feet of Grace, Adrienne moved.

In a split second, Adrienne grabbed Richard by the collar of his jacket and slammed him hard against the wall. The force rattled the framed glass on the wall. Adrienne’s grip was like iron, lifting Richard slightly off his feet, his dark eyes burning with lethal fury.

"Listen to me, you pathetic piece of trash," Adrienne growled, lowering his voice to a whisper that thrilled Grace and terrified Richard. "You abandoned a helpless child and a devoted mother. You have no rights here. You have no voice here. If you ever come near this estate again, if you ever attempt to contact Grace or Mia, or if you even think about mentioning their names to anyone..."

Adrienne leaned in closer, his jaw set like concrete. "...I will personally settle your debts with your loan sharks—by delivering you to them in a box. Do you understand me?"

Richard’s eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated terror. He could barely breathe under Adrienne’s grip. He nodded frantically, tears of fear springing to his eyes. "Yes! Yes! I'm sorry! I'll leave! I'll leave right now!"

Adrienne dropped him onto the floor like a sack of trash. "Marcus," Adrienne commanded without looking back. "Escort him to the state line. Ensure he buys a one-way ticket out of the country."

"With pleasure, Boss," Marcus said, stepping forward with two heavy guards and dragging the weeping, trembling man out the door.

When the room cleared, Grace let out a long, shuddering breath. The ghost of her painful past had finally been confronted—and banished forever.

Adrienne turned to her, his expression instantly softening into genuine concern. "Are you alright?"

Grace looked up at him, her heart overflowing with gratitude and love. Without saying a word, she stepped forward, wrapped her arms around his waist, and buried her face against his chest.

Adrienne wrapped his arms tightly around her, holding her close, resting his chin on top of her head.

May you like

"He will never bother you again, Grace," Adrienne whispered fiercely. "I promise you."

"I know," Grace murmured softly against his dark sweater, feeling the strong, steady beat of his heart. "Because I have you now."
